As a dedicated follower of Olivia Wilde‘s career, I find myself deeply moved by her insights and experiences in the world of filmmaking. Her journey from being an aspiring actress at the tender age of three to making her directorial debut with Booksmart in 2019 is nothing short of inspiring.
Olivia Wilde believes that actors, regardless of gender, may find it less challenging to move into directing roles compared to actresses. While some women have paved the way, she aspires for a significant change in the cultural landscape. At the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, she spoke extensively on this subject and shared her perspective that the storytelling ability is ingrained within us from our youth.
In many cases, when young girls express their love for movies, they’re often encouraged to become actresses. On the other hand, if little boys share their passion for films, they are more likely to hear suggestions like, “You could be a director.” This was Wilde’s observation.
Additionally, she spoke about the longstanding dominance of male directors in the film industry and suggested potential remedies. The actress from “Don’t Worry Darling” contends that the primary cause for underperforming female-directed movies lies with those controlling the financial resources.
As an ardent film enthusiast, I wholeheartedly believe that films directed by women shouldn’t underperform financially. It’s not the viewers who are at fault; it’s primarily the financiers and studios. The truth is, we need a transformation in our cultural mindset so that these decision-makers can invest in unique visions, take risks, and do so without allowing gender bias to cloud their judgment.
As a lifestyle expert, I firmly advocate that we empower women to embrace their rightful place and assert themselves confidently. Leadership roles, though challenging for everyone, often seem insurmountable for women due to an unspoken societal expectation that they should always make apologies, even for simply existing. This constant need to apologize hampers their ability to step into leadership positions with conviction. It’s essential we break this cycle and encourage women to claim their space and lead without hesitation or regret.
Wilde mentioned, “It’s more about changing the approach to raising women so they feel empowered to act fearlessly.
As a kid, I was already captivated by the idea of acting, dreaming about it as early as three years old! By 18, I left college behind to chase my Hollywood dreams. I gave myself a year’s grace period; if things hadn’t panned out, I’d be back in class. Remarkably, I managed to land some work instead. Looking back, it feels like luck was on my side.
Initially, she started out as a casting assistant, then landed her initial acting role on the television series Skin and later on The O.C. Her directorial debut came with the release of the romance-comedy film Booksmart in 2019.
