As a dedicated follower of the comic book universe, I find myself utterly thrilled by the recent developments in the DC Universe, particularly the return of James Gunn’s Creature Commandos and the reboot of the DC Studios. Having had the privilege of witnessing Gunn’s meteoric rise from the director of low-budget horror films to the co-chair of a major studio, I can say with absolute certainty that this man knows how to breathe life into even the most unlikely of characters.
Currently airing is James Gunn’s Creature Commandos, a production that has successfully captured the spotlight and revitalized the rebooted DC Universe. Interestingly, this was announced by Gunn himself to an actor who previously worked with DC films – Ryan Reynolds – when everything was still in its early planning stages, following Gunn’s appointment as co-chair of DC Studios.
In a recent chat on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy reminisced, “Upon getting the job at DC, one of the very first individuals I spoke with was Ryan Reynolds.
In a humorous twist, Gunn pointed out that the actor from The Hitman’s Bodyguard doesn’t seem to care much about anything, using playful thumb-typing motions to illustrate this in the narrative.
In my latest chat with host Josh Horowitz, filmmaker James Gunn shared an intriguing tidbit: He approached Ryan Reynolds about potentially reprising his role from the Detective Comics series.
According to Gunn, he playfully asked, “Aren’t you returning?” To which the Detective Pikachu voice actor responded, using a less than friendly tone, “Please leave this place!
In case you’re unaware, Ryan Reynolds played Hal Jordan in the 2011 Green Lantern film. Despite the movie receiving unfavorable reviews from both viewers and critics, Reynolds revisited the character of the intergalactic yet earthly superhero at a later time—with a comedic twist.
In the sequel of Deadpool, the character portrayed by Reynolds, known as Wade Wilson, was depicted traveling back in time to prevent actor Ryan Reynolds from agreeing to the deal for the film where Blake Lively was the lead actress.
In the meantime, dedicated DC fans are in for a treat since James Gunn is working on a fresh Green Lantern tale.
An HBO series based on the characters from Lanterns, featuring a narrative style similar to True Detective, has been officially confirmed. The show will primarily focus on John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre, as well as Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler.
