James Gunn Confirms Marvel Had Three ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Spin-Off Projects Planned

As a dedicated fan who has followed the Guardians of the Galaxy saga since its inception, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia mixed with excitement at James Gunn‘s recent revelations about Marvel’s abandoned spin-off projects.

The Guardians of the Galaxy, as we’re familiar with, were James Gunn’s creative offspring within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He conceived, directed, and produced the trilogy, turning it into a box office success. Indeed, his casting choices were spot-on, and he managed to strike the right chord even when the MCU was facing challenges. However, that era has now come to an end.

Gunn has switched to DC Universe and is striving to establish a strong rivalry for Marvel with his films. It appears that the Marvel Cinematic Universe might temporarily overlook the Guardians or alter them significantly, making them unrecognizable from Gunn’s tenure, which isn’t surprising.

In a recent chat with Josh Horowitz, James Gunn disclosed some intriguing details about Marvel’s plans for the Guardians of the Galaxy series. He mentioned that there had been plans for several spin-off projects from Disney (referred to as the House of the Mouse), which is definitely an exciting piece of news!

According to James Gunn, he was instrumental in bringing the Guardians of the Galaxy to life on the silver screen, and their first film became an unprecedented success. The second movie followed a similar pattern, while the third movie, concluding Gunn’s trilogy, provided a deeply moving goodbye to our cherished characters, foreshadowing a future that promises significant changes. Interestingly, during this interview, Gunn also revealed…

As a die-hard Guardians of the Galaxy fan, I can’t help but wonder if James Gunn’s revelation about potential spin-offs might become a reality. The lineup includes:

And if you don’t believe us, here is what Gunn said:

Prior to severing ties with Gunn, Marvel had lined up three spin-offs for this series, each of which we believe would have been fantastic.

The idea of a “Ravagers” series seems truly impressive, given it was apparently conceived during the time when Yondu was still alive. Imagining a mini-series chronicling their exploits would have been thrilling and leaves us puzzled as to why Marvel Cinematic Universe didn’t develop that concept further.

The second venture under consideration was a series centered around “Star-Lord: Extraordinary Hero,” where our protagonist and commander of the Guardians, Chris Pratt, was expected to reprise his character. Although James Gunn won’t be involved in this project, he expressed his desire for Marvel to explore these characters further and for Chris Pratt to return to the role, as he shared during an interview.

The “Rocket and Groot” venture was initially planned to take place prior to the final film. Director James Gunn appears genuinely disappointed that he couldn’t execute it. Given how the movie delved into Rocket’s backstory, it seems plausible that some of those ideas were incorporated within the film itself. Nevertheless, we can’t help but be disheartened that we didn’t get a standalone project for this duo.
