Having witnessed the evolution of gaming from 8-bit beginnings to the immersive experiences we enjoy today, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of technology. However, I firmly believe that the human touch in game development is a precious and irreplaceable element that must remain at the heart of our industry.

In a recent discussion, PlayStation’s co-CEO, Hermen Hulst, expressed his views on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) within gaming. He sees AI as having the capacity to bring about groundbreaking changes within the industry. However, he underlines the significance of preserving a genuine ‘human element’ during game creation.

In the future, Hulst foresees a world of gaming that appeals to two different tastes: one that thrives on AI-generated innovative adventures, and another that cherishes meticulously crafted content by humans. He underscores the importance of striking a perfect equilibrium between leveraging AI and safeguarding human ingenuity.

From a similar standpoint as other influential figures in the industry, this viewpoint echoes their sentiments. To illustrate, Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo, acknowledges the tight bond between game development and artificial intelligence technology. Nevertheless, he underscores that the company’s accumulated experience spanning several decades holds more weight than AI in crafting exceptional gaming experiences.

Just like me, an ardent follower, Andrew Wilson, the CEO of Electronic Arts, underscores that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not just a trend, but it’s deeply ingrained at the heart of their operations. In fact, there are more than a hundred active AI projects underway in our company, each contributing significantly to game development.

In simpler terms, the joint CEO of PlayStation believes that artificial intelligence can’t replicate the personal touch involved in creating video games, yet anticipates a significant role for AI within the gaming industry.

Nevertheless, while AI advancements offer numerous benefits, they also pose certain difficulties. For instance, there’s apprehension about how AI might influence creative jobs like writing and character creation. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has been on strike since July 2024, advocating for safeguards to prevent AI from using performers’ voices without permission.

Within the gaming world, there’s ongoing discussion about AI’s position. Some are concerned that AI might eclipse human ingenuity, but others view it as a means to bolster game creation. Hulst’s remarks echo a widespread industry opinion: while AI presents intriguing potential, the heart of gaming remains in human creativity and narrative expression.
