Taika Waititi Reveals How “Nerds” Hounded Him on Social Media After Joining Marvel:”They said, ‘This guy’s gonna ruin this. He’s gonna ruin Thor!’”

As a die-hard fan of Taika Waititi‘s work, I can’t help but admire his resilience and unwavering passion for storytelling. His journey with Marvel is a testament to the power of creative vision, even when faced with skepticism from fans. From “Thor: Ragnarok” to “Thor: Love & Thunder,” Waititi has shown an impressive ability to balance humor, emotion, and dark themes in ways that resonate with audiences.

Taika Waititi is renowned for his distinctive wit and imagination. In 2017, he helmed the successful film “Thor: Ragnarok,” significantly altering Thor’s portrayal within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Additionally, Waititi received an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit” and continues to work on a variety of creative endeavors, such as acting and producing in popular franchises.

During an exclusive chat with Entertainment Weekly, Waititi looked back at his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), expressing how Thor: Ragnarok significantly boosted his popularity within the “comic book community.

‘Watching Thor: Ragnarok catapulted me into the world of geeks, if you can call it that. I was happily living a tranquil life, and after that, wow, did the enthusiasts start to notice me. They warned, “This fellow is going to mess this up. He’s going to ruin Thor!”‘

“They seemed surprised when I suggested it again, but they quickly changed their tune once they realized Thor was involved. On Twitter, right before I quit the platform, I teased them saying, ‘You won’t know what you’re missing until I present it to you.’

Following the release of Ragnarok, fans have been particularly enamored with the updated portrayal of Thor, and this film continues to be regarded as his finest standalone movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), thanks to its exceptional blend of somber undertones, humor, and emotional depth.

Nevertheless, Director Taika Waititi’s subsequent film, “Thor: Love & Thunder” (2022), was met with a high number of disapprovals among Thor movie enthusiasts. Many viewers believed that Waititi overdid the silliness in the movie, which in turn adversely affected Thor’s character image.

In a recent interview, Waititi acknowledged that he accepted the project for ‘Love & Thunder’ primarily for financial reasons. However, when probed about its less-than-favorable reception, he chose not to elaborate. Instead, he declared it as the “creme de la creme” of the series.

Among all the Thor movies, ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ stands out as the best one, and let me tell you, Chris Hemsworth has really bulked up for this role! One aspect I particularly enjoy about this film is that not only do I adore Natalie Portman, but also the addition of Christian Bale – it’s simply amazing to see him on screen again!

Additionally, I’m quite familiar with many tunes by Guns N’ Roses. Incidentally, I had the opportunity to encounter Axl Rose once. To my surprise, he had an abundance of tales to share, but I won’t disclose those here.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel thrilled knowing that Taika Waititi believes he has won us over once more with his contributions to “The Mandalorian.” Not only did he direct an episode and lend his voice to the droid IG-11, but he also shared the exhilarating experience of commanding 75 stormtroopers, which made him feel like a kid living out his dream. Despite the initial excitement, he wisely suppressed those feelings to concentrate on the task at hand.

It appears that Director Waititi was initially slated to helm one of the impending Star Wars films, but there’s been no update regarding this for several months now. Lately, whispers suggest that the project could potentially be scrapped. However, in a rather unexpected development, the director has recently voiced his opinions on these rumors, offering an intriguing perspective on the matter.

What was ever alive? What is death? You know, death is just a new opportunity. More life to grow and flourish,” Waititi joked. “Everything’s always in development. My advice for any filmmaker is, ‘Just say yes to everything.’ Because, you know, things come and go.

You may not always realize where things stand, and I’ve found myself involved in matters that vanished for three whole years only to resurface again. It’s as if I say, ‘I assumed that was finished, now it seems I must deal with it once more.’
