‘Superman & Lois’ Stars Reveal Arrowverse Crossover Regrets and Near-Crossover with Batwoman

As a seasoned gamer and avid Superman enthusiast who has followed the Man of Steel’s adventures across various media, I can confidently say that Superman & Lois stands tall among its peers on The CW. Despite the challenges posed by changes at Nexstar and the subsequent downsizing of the show, it managed to deliver a compelling conclusion to its tale.

Despite being part of a distinct universe from the Arrowverse, “Superman & Lois” stands out as the top CW superhero series, primarily because of its robust storytelling. However, it’s important to note that this show has had its highs and lows, particularly in the most recent season.

Following Nexstar’s takeover of CW and significant overhaul, only a handful of shows, such as Superman & Lois, managed to persist through this period. During this transition, several shows were axed, leading roles were cut, and the writing team was slimmed down. The number of episodes produced also saw a decrease.

In spite of encountering numerous difficulties, the series successfully concluded its narrative during its fourth and last season, despite initially intending to carry on for a minimum of seven seasons.

During the San Francisco Fan Expo, the cast of Superman & Lois shared their regrettable plans for the series, which unfortunately won’t materialize. Initially, they touched upon the link between the show and the broader Arrowverse.

The series “Superman & Lois” shares connections with the Arrowverse due to Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Superman, initially introduced on “Supergirl“. Nevertheless, it was later clarified that this show unfolds in a distinct reality. The showrunner opted to maintain a division between the two universes to ensure each has its unique narrative.

Despite several original cast members returning from the Arrowverse for Superman & Lois, this show introduces some changes, such as recasting Lex Luthor. Showrunner Todd Helbing describes the characters in this series as alternate versions or “doppelgängers” of their Arrowverse counterparts.

As we brainstormed potential comparisons for his character, it seemed as if we were sketching a role that Tom Hanks could effortlessly embody without even opening his eyes. His impeccable comic timing, combined with the overall vibrancy of his performance, was simply remarkable.

Tyler Hoechlin expressed gratitude that both his preferred characters, Lex Luthor and Doomsday, were featured in “Superman & Lois”. He was thrilled at their pairing and thought requesting additional roles would be excessive, given the series’ upcoming conclusion.

Later on, Elizabeth Tulloch discussed the proposed collaboration with Batwoman. However, stringent COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 unfortunately prevented this from taking place.

To add to the complications, both shows were shot using different filming styles, leading to additional issues. Interestingly, a nod to Supergirl featuring Melissa Benoist was initially intended for the opening episode of Superman & Lois, but it was taken out during talks about separating the show from the Arrowverse.

In October 2020, we began filming under extremely stringent COVID-19 protocols. There was some discussion about potentially collaborating with Batwoman, but eventually, the decision was made to not proceed with that idea.

Regardless of other factors, “Superman & Lois” proves to be an outstanding contribution to live-action Superman portrayals, primarily because of its heartwarming themes and robust family interactions. The series is moving steadily towards its conclusion, with the last episode set to air on December 2nd.
