As an ardent fan with a soft spot for the fourth-wall-breaking antics of Deadpool and his uncensored humor, I must say that this behind-the-scenes revelation has only added to my admiration for the creators of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. The original joke about Disney’s financial constraints, while hilarious in its own right, was just one of those edgy jokes that made the film stand out.
As a devoted fan, one factor that made Deadpool & Wolverine such an unforgettable success was the abundance of witty, off-the-wall humor it delivered. However, not every hilarious joke found its way into the final edit. Previously, director Shawn Levy disclosed a particular joke that was swapped out for the Pinocchio gag without providing further details on the same.
It seems clear now that we understand exactly what he meant in his conversation. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the actual script for the movie – which included the original joke – was published on Disney’s For Your Consideration (FYC) website.
The joke goes with Deadpool saying: F**k! What we can’t even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse c**k in my throat.” But it appeared that the line was later altered to, “F**k, now Disney gets cheap? It’s like Pinocchio jammed his face in my a** and started lying like crazy.”
Levy had talked about this change while conversing with Entertainment Weekly’s previous interview, but at that time, he did not share what the actual joke was.
The director revealed to the media that just one line throughout the project had been requested for alteration. Remarkably, he and the film’s main star, Ryan Reynolds, vowed to uphold that line until their last breath.
He also mentioned that it had been swapped out for another equally vulgar jest involving Pinocchio sticking his face in the character portrayed by Reynolds’ rear end, and subsequently telling wild lies.
Levy commented, “I said something like, ‘Ryan, that’s an alternative response to, “Can we tidy this up?” Ryan Reynolds truly lives up to his reputation for being bold and daring right up to the limit.
It’s fair to conclude that the altered joke didn’t negatively impact the movie, as it still managed to achieve global box-office fame.
