‘Shang-Chi’ Star, Simu Liu, Shares Frustration Over Slow Progress on Sequel

As a die-hard Marvel fan who’s been hooked since the early days of Iron Man, I must say that the journey of Shang-Chi has been nothing short of exhilarating. Simu Liu‘s portrayal of the martial arts master is not only entertaining but also deeply touching, making us root for him every step of the way.

The film titled “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” proved to be an unanticipated triumph for Marvel Studios. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it features Simu Liu portraying Shang-Chi, a character who is compelled to confront his past when his father Wenwu, head of the Ten Rings organization, commands him and his sister Xialing on a mission to locate a legendary village. The ensemble also includes Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung.

Starting in December 2021, preparations for a follow-up to “Shang-Chi” commenced, with Destin Cretton resuming his role as both writer and director. Simu Liu was also slated to reprise his character, expressing interest in delving into how his character wields the Ten Rings’ power within the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In July 2023, Liu expressed uncertainty about when the movie would be produced. By November, Cretton had resigned as director of “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” (now known as “Avengers: Doomsday”), and was instead concentrating on the sequel to “Shang-Chi,” with filming set to start in March 2025.

Towards the end of that particular month, Liu affirmed that a sequel was being worked on, addressing fan anxieties regarding the scarcity of recent news.

Liu has openly expressed his annoyance over the delayed development of the sequel, as evidenced by him liking a critical comment about the studio’s slow pace in advancing the sequel on social media.

Simu Liu liked a TikTok comment calling out Marvel Studios for not making ‘SHANG-CHI 2’ sooner.

Previously this year, Simu Liu expressed uncertainty about when Shang-Chi might reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as such decisions lie outside his power. He further mentioned that he aims to remain an enthusiastic fan of the series and will be prepared whenever he’s summoned for a future role or appearance.

To tell the truth, those matters are way beyond my level of understanding. I prefer to remain a spectator, enjoying it from afar. When someone calls and says something like, “This is where you’ll join in and here’s when you’ll need to be unavailable,” it’s all quite overwhelming for me.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t entirely grim for Shang-Chi. He’s about to play a significant part in the upcoming animated extravaganza, “Marvel Zombies.” With Destin Daniel Cretton stepping up to direct “Spider-Man 4,” fans are buzzing with curiosity over whether Shang-Chi might make an appearance in that flick as well.

It’s been speculated that the Ten Rings might have a comparable function in the Multiverse Saga to how the Infinity Stones did in the Infinity Saga. Here’s hoping for an exciting continuation!
