As I reflect on the life of Margaret Hamilton, the original Wicked Witch of Oz, I am truly in awe of her resilience and dedication. Her portrayal of the iconic character was not just about donning green skin; it was a testament to her courage and determination.

In 1939, Margaret Hamilton took on the role of the Wicked Witch of Oz, but playing this part wasn’t merely about sporting green skin. Instead, she worked diligently to bring the complex character to life.

During an interview with People Magazine, the expert disclosed fascinating tales from the making of the Wizard of Oz movie, including details about the actor, Hamilton, who endured burn wounds and developed a persistent greenish hue on his skin due to spending numerous months covered in that color.

During an interview with media outlet Frike, it emerged that the actress had endured intense pain following an accident on set. Tragically, this occurred while she was filming a scene alongside Judy Garland. In this particular scene, the actress, Hamilton, was expected to vanish into smoke and flames as her character exited.

In addition, the author explained that the actress was told to position herself close to the elevator. As there was no digital special effects available at the time, the team set fire using actual flames.

He also mentioned that “They practiced it repeatedly one morning, and nailed it on their first attempt. Maggie delivered the line, spun around, reached the elevator, smoke billowed, they lowered her through the floor, she safely landed, a fire was perfectly executed, and there was great celebration on the set.

After midday break, Frike elaborated, “They all dispersed then. Maggie would often remark that when everyone returned from lunch, their focus and sharpness weren’t as keen as it was early in the day. Each attempt for another recording seemed to falter.

In the heat of the moment, the director grew anxious early in the day and instructed the team to light a fire, unaware that the actress was still on stage. Unfortunately, they lit the fire without realizing it, causing it to catch on Hamilton’s hat and broom.

The incident caused the actress to suffer from second-degree burns and third-degree burns on her arms, where the green color had been painted. 

Frike was reminded of the actress recounting the harrowing accident she experienced. The specialist explained, “They used rubbing alcohol to clean her face and hand. I’ve heard her narrate this incident numerous times. She mentioned, ‘I knew I had to scream.’ She swore, ‘I will always remember the agony of them applying rubbing alcohol on those two burns.’

Despite the accidents and pain, the actress went on to work in the films and overcame her fear.
