As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen quite a few instances of creative borrowing in the industry. It’s like watching a game of telephone between developers – one starts with an idea, and by the time it reaches the next, it becomes something entirely different yet eerily similar.
Tencent’s freshly launched game, Light of Motiram, has sparked curiosity due to its striking similarity to Guerrilla’s Horizon series, blended with hints of Palworld’s aesthetic. This game takes place in a world where titanic mechanical beasts reign supreme, inviting players to traverse expansive landscapes, construct settlements, upgrade technology, nurture ‘Mechanimals’, and confront daunting adversaries. The game narrative highlights embarking on a journey from a primitive era and shaping your own path of progression.
It’s challenging not to notice the resemblances to Horizon. One picture features humans dressed traditionally and armed with bows and spears, battling a monster that looks like the Tremortusk from Horizon. Another shows mechanical beasts that are very similar to Horizon’s Chargers, though they have slightly different horn designs. The tribespeople also share a strong resemblance to Horizon’s Utaru tribe.
It’s clear that these similarities haven’t been overlooked. Industry analyst Serkan Toto expressed his amusement, stating, ‘There’s nothing left to be embarrassed about.’ Eurogamer has sought comments from Sony, Tencent, and Pocketpair regarding the announcement. Light of Motiram is expected to launch on PC via Steam and Epic, but a specific release date hasn’t been disclosed yet.
It’s worth noting that the game’s music resembles Horizon’s soundtrack, an observation Guerrilla, the developer, seems to be embracing as they delve deeper into the Horizon series, distancing themselves from their earlier work on the Killzone games. Roy Postma, the art director, has confirmed this move away from Killzone was a deliberate choice, aiming to break free from the darker and more violent themes associated with it.
Essentially, Motiram’s recent revelation has stirred up conversations because it bears a striking resemblance to the Horizon series, causing a lot of intrigue regarding how it will be received in the future.
