As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for cinematic excellence, I find myself deeply disheartened by the recent revelations about Ridley Scott’s filmmaking approach. Having grown up watching his masterpieces like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven, it’s a bittersweet pill to swallow the news that the meticulous craftsmanship I admired seems to be waning.
In a new podcast interview with DocFix, John Mathieson, the cinematographer for ‘Gladiator 2,’ expressed strong reservations about Ridley Scott’s recent approach to filmmaking.
As a game enthusiast, let me share some insights about Ridley Scott’s recent creative process. Previously, I had collaborated with him on several projects like ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. What I can say now is that his approach to filmmaking has noticeably evolved, enhancing the overall quality of his movies.
As stated by Mathieson, Scott, at the age of 87, has started working with a faster pace and often employs numerous cameras during filming. In his opinion, this approach detracts from the overall cinematic experience.
He considered this method harmful for precise filmmaking, as it limits lighting possibilities and decreases the focus on finer details.
Mathieson expressed regret over the shallow nature of recent scenes, a characteristic he believes was a distinctive trait in Scott’s previous pieces of work.
Things used to feel frantic with him, but something about that pace doesn’t sit well with me, I believe it’s a style many others share. However, when it comes to his movies, the world seems to adore them, and Ridley Scott is a master of his craft who can do as he pleases. The allure of multi-camera shooting lies in the ability to capture more raw performances.

The film’s visual effects artist voiced disapproval towards excessive use of digital effects to correct mistakes in editing stages, such as exposed equipment like microphones and cameras, labeling this method as ‘unprofessional’.
According to his point, this fresh approach emphasizes speed more than the finesse of workmanship, creating a hectic and fast-paced environment on the filming location, as if everyone is in a constant hurry.
Despite these criticisms, Scott remains a prolific figure in Hollywood, having released four films in the last three years including ‘The Last Duel’ and ‘House of Gucci,’ with several more projects like ‘The Dog Stars’ and ‘Gladiator III’ in the pipeline.
It’s uncertain if they will work together again, but Mathieson seems displeased, which suggests that their extended collaboration may have come to an end.
