As a long-time admirer and follower of Hollywood, I must say that witnessing the reunion of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright after 30 years is nothing short of magical. It’s like stepping back into time, only to find that these timeless characters have evolved and grown with us.
30 years after their collaboration on the 1994 film Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright are reuniting on screen for the upcoming drama Here. According to Hanks, who portrays Richard in the new movie, there are traces of his Forrest Gump character in his current role. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he hinted that a small part of Forrest is still present within him.
He stated that movies have a concluding point, to which the Academy Award winner concurred. They both acknowledged that some elements from their initial film carried over into subsequent productions, including their performances as well as their famous roles such as Chuck in Cast Away and Queen in Beowulf, which they continued to embody in other projects.
He noted that the character seems to struggle with what feels intuitive at the moment, though it might seem strange or unreal. “We arrive at this point,” Hanks continued, explaining how the characters in the generational drama reach a turning point when they transition from non-parents to parents. This can be likened to the journey of Forrest and Jenny.
He clarified that throughout these films, both our characters and the recurring theme for analysis revolve around a similar concept, which can be likened to a significant turning point or boundary (Rubicon). In the film “Here,” we follow Richard (Hanks) and Margaret (Wright), former high school sweethearts who find themselves married and residing in Richard’s family home as a result of an unplanned pregnancy.
One person views the situation as a harmonious family life, whereas another perceives it as a confining situation without an exit, a feeling that the audience might also sense immersively.
The story is about generations, focusing on families and the unique home they cherish, experiencing affection, sorrow, joy, and existence together. Hanks noted that Richard and Margaret have contrasting perspectives regarding their house. “Richard views his house as a refuge and sanctuary, while Margaret sees it as a confinement,” he explained. However, they share a deep love for each other.
Robert Zemeckis, who had previously collaborated with the actors since their work on Forrest Gump, consented to Hanks’ statement. “Indeed, it was impactful because it occurred here,” he clarified, “and the ‘here,’ which carries a unique significance for each character, is woven into the very essence of the story.
