‘Sniper Elite’ Battle Royale Axed as Live-Service Games Face Doubt

As a dedicated gamer who’s witnessed the rise and fall of numerous gaming projects, this news about the cancellation of ‘Project Archipelago: Sniper Battle Royale‘ has left me with a mix of disappointment and intrigue. The initial concept sounded fascinating, blending the tactical precision of sniper gameplay with the adrenaline rush of battle royale.

It’s unfortunate to report that the expected ‘Sniper Elite’ battle royale game, titled ‘Project Archipelago: Sniper Battle Royale,’ has been scrapped due to Tencent, its funding partner, pulling out their support. This decision was likely made following the underwhelming success of PlayStation’s live-service title, ‘Concord,’ which has caused investors to be cautious about similar endeavors.

Back in August midway through the year, developers at Rebellion, creators of ‘Sniper Elite’, extended an invitation to players for a three-day preliminary test play of Project Archipelago. In this game, teams of snipers engaged in distant battles set against backdrops of deteriorating, almost-future landscapes. A unique blend of contemporary architecture with futuristic elements such as airships was showcased in the game.

After that first conversation, there hasn’t been much discussion about the game’s development or updates since then.

It’s been reported that Rebellion hasn’t made any statements regarding the rumors of a game cancellation. But it appears that the development team behind the project has shifted focus to the upcoming title in the series, ‘Sniper Elite: Resistance’, slated for release on 28th January 2025.

It’s been reported that the Sniper Elite Battle Royale project has been discontinued, causing ripples of concern in the gaming industry about the viability of live-service games.

The scrapping of ‘Project Archipelago’ underscores a rising apprehension within the gaming sector about live-service games, following notable setbacks like ‘Concord.’ As a result, game developers and investors are becoming more prudent, critically evaluating the feasibility of such ventures in today’s market environment.

With ongoing advancements in the field, it’s become apparent that the triumph of live service games isn’t automatic. In the future, creators and financiers may exercise more cautiousness in their ventures, striving to dodge the mistakes made by contemporary productions.
