‘Arcane’ Co-Creator Christian Linke Responds to Backlash Over Controversial Season 2 Moments

As a dedicated fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of “Arcane,” I can confidently say that the show’s second season was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, and not just because of the numerous character deaths. The anticipation, the controversy, and Christian Linke‘s responses have made this experience even more thrilling.

Due to its widespread appeal, even among those who aren’t fans of the original game, Netflix’s animated series “Arcane”, inspired by the popular video game “League of Legends”, has garnered significant praise from both critics and viewers. The first season was met with critical acclaim and made history as the first streaming series to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program and an Annie Award for Best General Audience Animated Television Broadcast Production.

Indeed, given the show’s enormous popularity, many anticipated a second season. Yet, unexpectedly, Netflix chose to delay its release instead of expediting it. Eventually, the second season made its debut in November 2024, divided into three segments. The concluding parts were unveiled on November 23, 2024.

Despite the eager anticipation for the second season, it wasn’t without its share of debates. The finale and certain contentious scenes sparked a significant amount of criticism, leading to a strong reaction. As a result, co-creator Christian Linke felt compelled to address the backlash!

In this discussion, we’re going to avoid revealing significant plot points, but we will mention that much of the criticism stems from the high number of character deaths throughout the series. We won’t disclose who met their end, but we will share that the way these deaths occurred and the specific characters involved were not what was anticipated.

Many supporters found themselves displeased by these developments, and as one might expect from devoted spectators, they expressed their frustration online. Indeed, there was an abundance of expressions of dissatisfaction and sadness. Here are a few examples:

just showrunner thangs

To put it simply, why was the crucial dialogue between Ekko and Jinx, a key moment in the climax, excluded from the actual screenplay? Or, more casually, could you explain the reasoning behind having this important conversation taking place off-screen instead of showing it to us directly?

I’m curious to find out why season 2 began as it did. I get that watching episode 9 of season 1 followed by episode 1 of season 2 provides context, but for me, the pace and structure in the first episode seemed a tad disorganized and hurried, or is it just my impression?

You are not a showrunner, you are a thief.

It can be clearly seen that it was intentionally planned to place Heimer and Jayce together, with Heimer not addressing or showing any worry regarding Jayce’s recent experiences, or even expressing concern for Viktor. The character interactions undeniably seem less impactful in the more recent episodes.

However, it’s clear that Christian Linke chose to address this matter. When asked about the criticism, this was his response:

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder if there exists a realm where everyone finds satisfaction in these stories. The notion of something being inconsequential to me remains elusive and challenging to fully grasp. Each climactic moment in our characters’ journeys, be it life or death, is a direct result of their decisions. I find myself captivated, eager to listen and learn from them as they navigate through their choices and experiences.

Occasionally, I find myself perceiving valuable insights for our future actions. At times, I may not fully concur, but I make an effort to pay close attention and carefully consider the perspectives presented. It seems that we cover a wide range of opinions: some feel there are aspects that move too quickly, involve too much, or lack sufficient development, while others express concern about the absence or depth of certain character elements.
