‘Arcane’ Producer Reveals Vi & Caitlyn’s Romance Scene Was Dialed Back: “We got a slap on the wrist”

As a dedicated fan of ‘Arcane’, I must say that this behind-the-scenes revelation about the Vi and Caitlyn romance scene has added an intriguing layer to my appreciation for the show. The emotional depth and the way their relationship was handled were truly commendable, despite the unfortunate trimming.

Just as the initial season, ‘Arcane’s’ second season has been met with widespread praise upon its release. However, there were some concerns about the speed at which the story unfolded. Overall though, it was a major hit.

At the core of ‘Arcane’ season 2, it was the well-developed characters that truly captivated viewers, with the slow-building romance between Caitlyn and Vi being a particular highlight. In the last episodes, this relationship found a fulfilling conclusion.

In spite of the sad events unfolding during the series, their blossoming relationship stood out as one of the most captivating aspects. The writers skillfully crafted moments that made audiences fear for their reunion.

One satisfying aspect of the season is the emotional return you get when their actions are seen, and Vi’s tale, combined with her bond with Caitlyn, adds an extra layer of gratification to the finale.

As a gamer, I found one particularly striking moment in the series that, as per the producer, got significantly trimmed down.

Following the end of Season 2, co-creator Christian Linke disclosed that during production, the romantic scene between Vi and Caitlyn was modified from its initial form. In a conversation with streamer Necrit94, Linke mentioned that the extended original version of the scene, which garnered acclaim for its depiction of queer relationships, was trimmed down before being broadcast. He described the final version as “the toned-down version.

Linke: “This was the dialed back version.”

Necrit: “Woah, it was longer?”

Linke: “Yes.”

Link clarified that the scene was altered due to a “reprimand” for the more mature adaptation, though he didn’t identify who provided the criticism. He humorously added that in the original version, the scene would have been extended, potentially earning ‘League of Legends’ a mature rating if it hadn’t been modified.

You’re saying, “I kept thinking, ‘This is continuing…it’s still ongoing…still ongoing!’. It carried on for quite some time, right? That implies there might have been more at the beginning.

Linke: “Yes. We got a slap on the wrist. League of Legends is going to be rated mature now.”

Link implied that the “light reprimand” was probably issued by Netflix or Riot Games, since the initial scene might have given the impression that “League of Legends” was too mature. When asked if the extended version would ever surface, he playfully suggested it might be on a “French storage device” and could potentially be added to a future “director’s cut.

Might I ask if there’s a chance we could share the initial concept? A passionate community is eagerly awaiting it.

Linke: “It is probably on some French hard drive. Director’s cut.”

As a gaming enthusiast, I can see where Linke’s point is coming from. It seems like the creators have been skillfully steering clear of an R-rating so far, possibly because both Netflix and Riot Games prefer maintaining the show’s current, more accessible rating for now.
