As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the trenches of countless dark, gritty, and fantastical worlds, I can’t help but feel a surge of anticipation for the impending updates to Darkest Dungeon 2. Having braved the original game’s unforgiving landscapes and battled its twisted denizens, I find myself eagerly awaiting the new Kingdoms mode and the Inhuman Bondage DLC.
On January 27, 2025, Darkest Dungeon 2 will be enlarging with a complimentary update and a new payable expansion pack for PC gamers. The Kingdoms mode provides a unique gameplay experience, complementing the primary Confessions campaign.
We traverse through a continuous game world, moving from one Inn to another, as we race against time to accomplish various missions. Along the journey, we’ll encounter new hostile factions, beginning with the ‘decayed and ravenous beastmen’. Our duties involve finishing contracts and enhancing and safeguarding Inns.
In the expansion pack called “Inhuman Bondage,” you’ll encounter a mini-region known as The Catacombs, which lies beneath the Kingdom. Here, you’ll battle a ‘poisonous, dripping menace.’ This region introduces new adversaries and loot, available for play in both Confessions and Kingdoms game modes. Furthermore, this DLC reintroduces a beloved character from the original game, The Abomination. This character boasts a fully-voiced backstory and unique abilities and items.
According to creative director Chris Bourassa, instead of just piling on additional content, the team decided to fundamentally change the structure of DDII by thinking about it in a completely fresh way. This innovative mindset ultimately resulted in the development of a brand-new game mode called Kingdoms.
The sequel to “Darkest Dungeon”, titled Darkest Dungeon 2, can now be played on various platforms including PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. It is anticipated that console versions of the upcoming free update and DLC will become available following the initial PC launch.
Ever since its debut in May 2023, Red Hook has consistently improved and polished the game. Our assessment labeled it as ‘an extensive and frequently outstanding, albeit not absolutely essential, reimagining of a darkly gripping fantasy‘ instead.
