‘No Longer Trusted Them’: Jon Watts Divulges on Why Apple TV+’s Wolfs Sequel Starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt Was Canceled

As a lifestyle expert with years of experience in the film industry, I find the situation between Jon Watts and Apple TV+ surrounding the movie “Wolves” quite intriguing. The fact that a sequel was initially announced, only to be abruptly cancelled, is a rare occurrence in Hollywood.

One noteworthy movie on Apple TV+ is “Wolves,” which has drawn considerable notice for the streaming service. Although the film starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, directed by Jon Watts, was generally well-received by viewers, an unusual predicament occurred between the director and Apple TV+.

As a devoted fan, I was eagerly looking forward to the upcoming sequel of the movie we all love. Unfortunately, it seems that the long-awaited continuation won’t materialize anymore.

A rather disheartening piece of information has emerged lately, and director Jon Watts has voiced his opinions about it. Although numerous fans showed astonishment upon hearing the news, the filmmaker shed light on the subject in a recent interview with Deadline.

Earlier this year, Watts shared his version of the movie with Apple TV+, expressing their excitement as “very eager.” Impressed by his craftsmanship, Apple TV+ promptly tasked him with starting the creation of a follow-up film.

Initially, things seemed one way, but then events unexpectedly changed course. The streamer disclosed their plan to skip a complete theater release for Wolves and instead concentrate on streaming. To make things even more complicated, Apple TV+ informed Watts about this decision only a week before the news became public knowledge. This announcement came at the same time as the news that a sequel was already underway.

According to Watts, upon learning about the movie’s restricted theater distribution, he asked the streaming platform to “kindly omit any mention of me working on a sequel.

Apple TV+ chose to disregard the request and proceeded with the announcement of Wolfwalkers 2, which appears to be a strategy aimed at providing “a favorable perspective on their transition to streaming content.

In further conversation with the media outlet, the director disclosed that he refunded the money provided by Apple TV+ for working on the sequel. He expressed a preference not to discuss the upcoming project to avoid creating unwanted negative publicity.

In summary, Watts admitted that he made the decision to halt the development of Wolf’s sequel, not Apple, as he had lost faith in them as a collaborative creative partner.

Wolfs was released with a limited theatrical run on September 20, 2024.

It stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt alongside Amy Ryan and Richard Kind.
