New ‘Justice League Unlimited’ Comic Pays Tribute to Classic Animated Series

As someone who has been following DC comics for more than two decades now and grew up watching the Justice League Unlimited (JLU) animated series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming Justice League Unlimited #1! It’s like a dream come true to see my childhood favorite superhero team getting the tribute it truly deserves.

From my perspective as a devoted fan, there’s no denying that among DC Comics’ lineup, it’s the mighty Justice League that truly stands out, mirroring the significance of Marvel’s Avengers. Granted, DC boasts other teams too, but when it comes to making a lasting impression and capturing the hearts of fans, none can rival the Justice League. It’s not hard to see why they have achieved such enduring popularity.

Lately, some assertions have been made stating that the Justice League outshines the Avengers as the leading superhero team in popular American comics. While this may spark debate, it’s clear that the present Justice League comic series is thriving, and many fans are delighted with its current direction.

Indeed, it’s worth noting that the first issue of “Justice League Unlimited” is set to honor an iconic animated adaptation of the “Justice League” series. Rest assured, we’ll be delivering a comprehensive review on this exciting development, which is bound to bring joy to many fans.

The animated series titled “Justice League Unlimited“, often referred to as “JLU“, is among the most well-liked animated shows ever created by DC Comics.

This show has been likened to “Batman: The Animated Series” and is often considered one of the finest animated productions from DC Comics. Originating on Cartoon Network between July 31, 2004, and May 13, 2006, it may have only spanned 39 episodes across three seasons, but its impact has been significant. It quickly gained a devoted fanbase, earning the title of a cult classic cherished by many.

Fans of DC Comics will be thrilled to delve into the tribute the creators have crafted for the beloved series in “Justice League Unlimited #1,” set to release on November 27, 2024. Here’s a sneak peek at how they plan to honor its impact:

In case you don’t see it immediately, here it is:

Despite featuring distinct characters, the resemblance is undeniable, as it appears the creators intentionally paid tribute to the acclaimed Justice League Unlimited animated show.

In this particular comic book scene, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash are present, but not Martian Manhunter. Additionally, Black Lightning and Star Sapphire make an appearance too.

The upcoming series will be written by the creative duo behind “Batman/Superman: World’s Finest” and “Absolute Power,” specifically Mark Waid and Dan Mora. In anticipation of its launch, Waid shared some insights as follows:

In the heat of Absolute Power, I found myself reflecting on what could’ve been if the Justice League hadn’t disbanded. If we were still keeping in touch like we used to, perhaps this whole ordeal wouldn’t have unfolded as it did.

Instead of just the conventional Justice League collaborating, we’re gathering everyone with powers who wishes to join the team. This includes members from the Justice Society and the Titans. The decision about who handles each potential threat will be made by Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, depending on the nature of the threat at hand.

The enormous size of the Justice League team makes it incredibly challenging to manage and maintain order. For instance, while managing the lineup for Absolute Power, we had as many as 92 heroes behind bars at some point. Similarly, handling a large cast like the Justice League is so complex that I even use trading cards to help me keep track of who’s active and where they should be positioned.

Without this visual aid, it would significantly increase the difficulty for me to manage them all. However, Dan finds great joy in sketching these characters, similar to George Pérez, who takes delight in drawing everyone.
