Actor Bowen Yang, known for his witty humor on SNL, spoke candidly about the network’s peculiar parties. He shared that these events often take place in rooms adorned with an unusual assortment of trash.
During an interview with People Magazine, the comedian shared that the creative concepts were primarily due to Kate McKinnon and Aidy Brian’s suggestions.
For several years now, instead of Secret Santa and white elephant gift exchanges, which previously caused some discomfort among the SNL cast and crew due to hurt feelings and issues with original gifts, they’ve opted for “garbage parties” as a more enjoyable alternative celebration.
In more detail, Yang clarified to the entertainment outlet, “This tradition originated due to comments like, ‘I received a poor one, while this person got a good one.’ To eliminate such disparities, Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon in their initial years chose to discontinue it.
He also mentioned that following the final rehearsal for the Christmas show, they would have what is known as a “garbage party”. This is where everyone brings an item to share, similar to a potluck, rather than exchanging gifts.
In simpler terms, during the discussion, the actor mentioned the potluck setup where every participant contributes by bringing any dish they prefer – it could be burgers, jello shots, or something else entirely. Regardless of what they bring, they all unite to provide a mix of offerings for everyone’s enjoyment.
The Monkey King continued by explaining that the holiday gatherings provide a chance for the acting crew to blow off some steam and simply have fun.
He shared that this is our rare opportunity for unwinding, as the afterparties are scarce. It’s challenging for everyone to gather together since not everyone attends the afterparty, some are exhausted, and it requires a lot of effort.
30 Rockefeller Center’s NBC writers’ room is where the parties take place. The actor added that these spaces are located on the first floor, with regular lights being turned off and party lights being switched on instead. “Imagine if each person’s contribution becomes a karaoke machine, turning the atmosphere into chaos, yet it’s incredibly enjoyable,” the actor described.
In terms of professional endeavors, Bowen Yang recently made an appearance in the Wicked film, sharing the screen with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The cinematic production has been thriving in theaters.
