As a long-time fan who has followed Ariana Grande‘s career since her Nickelodeon days, it’s absolutely thrilling to see my favorite pop star finally bring Glinda to life on screen. It’s like watching a dream come true! I remember that 2013 YouTube video where she expressed her desire to play Glinda, and now here we are eight years later, with Ariana Grande embodying the beloved character in Wicked.
Ariana Grande, known for her hit “We Can’t Be Friends,” has delivered an exceptional portrayal of Glinda on screen, a role that she had long aspired to play.
A clip dating back to 2013, recently reemerged after the worldwide acclaim of director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of “Wicked”, features Ariana Grande expressing her desire to play the character of Glinda in a future Broadway production.
In the YouTube video, you’ll observe her openly stating her wish to portray Glinda in the enchanting story that serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
In the video clip, taken around eight years prior to her role in the film, it’s evident that her enthusiasm for the character was unmistakable, visible in her eyes and conveyed through her speech.
The video features KiddNation dated 2013, during which host Kidd Kraddick inquires from the singer of “Boy is Mine” about her preferred role between Glinda and Elphaba, should she ever participate in the stage production.
Well, even before the host could finish his question, Grande jumped in, stating, “Glinda, for sure.”
In a recent chat, Ariana Grande herself confessed that belting out Elphaba’s tunes in the play would be an absolute blast. Yet, her passion for embodying Glinda persists.
If you’re not aware, the year 2013 marked the transition of Ariana Grande from a Nickelodeon actor to a popular music artist.
In the same year, Jennifer Lawrence, known for her role in Don’t Look Up, released her song “Popular” in collaboration with musician Mika. Notably, this song takes inspiration from a sample of the melody from “Wicked,” another song of the same name.
It wasn’t until 2018, during NBC’s 15th anniversary special, that Grande’s long-standing interest in playing Glinda was rekindled, as she performed a cover of Wicked’s The Wizard and I.
The movie “Wicked,” as reported by Entertainment Weekly in 2020, had updates indicating that production progress was being made according to composer Stephen Schwartz. Unfortunately, the film’s development came to a standstill due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, causing a delay in its release.
Apart from the singer known for “No Tears Left to Cry”, the musical Wicked also features Cynthia Erivo in the role of Elphaba, Michelle Yeoh portraying Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, and Peter Dinklage playing Dr. Dillamond.
