As a movie enthusiast who’s been around the block a few times, I can confidently say that the collaboration between director Edward Berger and Austin Butler on The Barrier is nothing short of a cinematic dream team. Berger’s recent successes, including four Oscars for All Quiet on the Western Front, have solidified his position as one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood.
Filmmakers Edward Berger, famed for his work on ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and ‘Elvis’, garnering an Oscar nomination, and Austin Butler, who received an Oscar nod for ‘Elvis’, are joining forces for ‘The Barrier’, a captivating time-travel movie that has been generating considerable buzz within the industry.
According to a brief tale penned by MacMillan Hedges, specifics about the narrative are under wraps, but industry insiders are drawing parallels to a fusion of Interstellar and Top Gun. Berger will be at the helm as both director and producer, with Hedges contributing to the script and also producing.
1) In the upcoming production, Butler will not only act but also serve as an executive producer. This exciting venture was launched on Wednesday, igniting curiosity among high-ranking executives, just before Thanksgiving.
Berger, who bagged four Oscars for “All Quiet on the Western Front,” including Best International Feature Film, is currently a highly demanded filmmaker. His recent work, “Conclave,” a gripping thriller featuring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, hit U.S. theaters in October following its premiere at Telluride.
Apart from his ongoing projects, Berger is wrapping up the production of “The Ballad of a Small Player“, an engaging gambling drama starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton, which will be available on Netflix.
Austin Butler, who is currently working on Darren Aronofsky’s suspenseful movie “Caught Stealing” for Sony, has had quite a packed year. His acting credits include portraying a villain in the sequel to “Dune,” titled “Dune: Part Two,” collaborating with Tom Hardy in “The Bikeriders,” and featuring in the Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air.” Upcoming, you can catch him in Ari Aster’s film “Eddington,” alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone.
Emerging writer MacMillan Hedges has impressed with his scripts “The Searchers” and “Cosmic Sunday,” both of which made the Black List. His science fiction spec script, “Relay,” was bought by producer Neal H. Moritz, and he’s currently working on a project titled “Tilt” in collaboration with Chernin.
