As a seasoned gamer and cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of cinema over the past few decades, I must say that the anticipation for the Dune trilogy has been palpable. Having grown up reading Frank Herbert’s epic saga and revisiting it numerous times, I can confidently assert that Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation has surpassed my wildest expectations.
Frank Herbert’s epic science fiction tale, “Dune,” holds a special place among sci-fi enthusiasts; it’s often referred to as the “Lord of the Rings” equivalent in the science fiction genre. This timeless story has inspired countless individuals, and currently, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve is bringing the series to life with a trilogy of movies.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Dune and Dune: Part Two have already graced our screens, with the third and concluding chapter of this epic trilogy, Dune: Messiah, now in production. In the interim, we’re lucky enough to immerse ourselves in a captivating prequel series, Dune: Prophecy, which is currently airing.
As we eagerly anticipate the third film and delight in the current series, let’s shift our focus to a recent conversation with the talented Josh Brolin, known for his role as Gurney Halleck. Although his interview primarily revolved around himself and his upcoming autobiography, he also shared insights about the film and Villeneuve’s potential Oscar nod. If you’re curious to learn more about what he had to say, keep on reading!
If you recall, the initial Dune movie received a grand total of 10 Oscar nominations, taking home six awards in technical fields. Notably, it was also up for Best Picture, but Denis Villeneuve didn’t receive a nomination for Best Director that year. The upcoming film, Dune: Part Two, has been highly praised as an enhancement over the first movie, and with its budget exceeding $700 million, it surpassed the original in many ways, and Villeneuve’s direction certainly reflects this improvement.
The upcoming 97th Academy Awards has Dune: Part Two tipped as one of the probable frontrunners, despite the official nominations not being disclosed yet. Numerous critics and experts predict that the film will undeniably be a strong contender, and indeed, it appears to be so. It’s worth mentioning that Denis Villeneuve is widely believed to deserve a Best Director nomination this time around, and Josh Brolin wholeheartedly concurs with this sentiment.
If he isn’t nominated this year, I plan to retire from acting. This movie was superior to the first one. Watching it felt like my mind was shattered open. It’s remarkable, and Denis is certainly one of our most skilled filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any significance at all, they should acknowledge him.

It’s clear that Brolin strongly feels he should receive an Oscar nomination for his role, and honestly, we share that sentiment. The direction was outstanding, and while it’s unlikely that Brolin will actually retire because of this, his statement underscores his strong support for Villeneuve and his work. From our perspective, we can only endorse both of them. We’ll let you know as soon as there are any new developments regarding this matter.
