As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say, the Pokémon TCG Pocket has truly taken me by storm! With over 30 million downloads already, it’s clear that this game is a phenomenon. It may not have filled the void left by the absence of a main-line Pokémon game, but it certainly has managed to scratch that itch in its unique way.
Since its launch on October 29th of this year, the popularity of the Pokémon TCG Pocket app has skyrocketed, with early predictions from November suggesting that it’s already been downloaded more than 30 million times. This rapid growth has solidified the game as a major triumph for the Pokémon Company.
Before its launch, there were concerns that the game might not be sufficient to bridge the gap until we get another mainline Pokémon game in 2025 (to be honest, I still feel like something is missing). However, it has successfully scratched that itch with its pack-opening mechanics and engaging gameplay that players have been enjoying.
Besides the gameplay elements currently offered, as explained on Serebii, Pokémon TCG Pocket will also incorporate another iconic feature: trading. At present, some players may find it challenging to acquire specific cards, particularly those who don’t utilize in-game purchases, as the packs they open often contain duplicates instead of the desired cards needed to experiment with different decks or playstyles.
Adding trading as an option will let players potentially acquire the cards required for constructing a new deck, while also helping them discard unnecessary duplicates.
Currently, it’s unclear how extensive the trading feature will eventually become as only specific cards have been announced as tradeable. This is just the beginning, though, with plans for a broader and more inclusive trading system in the game down the line. Trading is scheduled to commence in January 2025.
Apart from trade updates, it was also revealed that fresh booster packs will be released by year-end, introducing more diversity in the card selection players can draw from. Previously, hints suggested new packs were coming, but now we know exactly when to anticipate these changes.
Though it might have been disappointing for many Pokémon fans that no new main series or remake game was released this year, the reception towards Pokémon TCG Pocket has been positive. It’ll be intriguing to observe how they will develop and broaden this game in 2025.
