Did Lady Gaga And Shawn Mendez Nearly Bag Roles In Wicked? Here’s What Reports Claim

As a devoted fan who has followed the Wicked journey since its inception, I must say, the casting of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is nothing short of magical! The initial choices of Lady Gaga and Shawn Mendez were intriguing, but the transformation from their potential roles to the enchanting duo we have today is simply breathtaking.

One of this year’s most eagerly awaited films, “Wicked” starring Ariana Grande, has generated a lot of excitement among fans. As they eagerly anticipate seeing the on-screen dynamic between Grande and Cynthia Erivo, it’s interesting to note that the actresses weren’t initially cast as Glinda and Elphaba respectively.

As reported by Page Six, it was anticipated that the film would be helmed by the renowned British director, Stephen Daldry. This director is recognized for his exceptional work on the critically praised show, The Crown.

In this production, Daldry will be directing the show, with Lady Gaga cast as Elphaba and Shawn Mendes selected for the part of Fiyero Tigelaar.

Gaga and the movie director held discussions on several occasions regarding her role. As per a reliable insider, “They held talks, both of them, regarding the character and who she might portray. She was essentially chosen for the part in his vision, but unfortunately, things didn’t work out.

Director Daldry initially declared his intention to release a fantasy movie, but he withdrew from the project in 2020 due to scheduling conflicts. Subsequently, Lady Gaga, known for her hits like Bad Romance, appeared in the 2024 sequel of Joker, sharing the screen with Joaquin Phoenix.

In order to prevent the project from coming to a full halt, Jon M. Chu intervened, selecting Erivo for the role of Elphaba, while Jonathan Bailey took over Mendez’s part.

Joining the star-studded cast are Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, Ethan Slater, and Jeff Goldblum, along with several other talented individuals.

While touring the country to promote their movie, Erivo expressed her delight at acting alongside Grande.

During an interview with a media outlet, the actress playing Harriet shared that they and their co-star often felt a strong connection, saying, “We both felt we had to collaborate. So, on occasions when we needed to decline a few requests, we would alternate. ‘You say no one time, I say no another.’ This created a genuine partnership… between us.

Wicked will hit theaters on November 22.
