‘Agatha All Along’ Star Miles Gutierrez-Riley Responds to Eddie and Hulkling Fan Theories: “we’re going to continue exploring Billy’s background”

As a fan who has been eagerly following the representation of queer characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I am thrilled to see the authentic portrayal of Billy Maximoff and his relationship with Eddie in Agatha All Along. Miles Gutierrez-Riley‘s heartfelt words about the positive response from fans only reinforces my belief that the show’s creators are truly dedicated to staying true to the source material.

Agatha All Along further emphasized the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s dedication to diversity, particularly in regards to queer representation, by centering around Joe Locke’s portrayal of Wiccan, one of the most beloved gay superheroes from the comic books. The series effectively explored these themes and remained faithful to the source material, where Wiccan’s relationship with Hulkling is a significant aspect of his character.

In the series, Billy Maximoff is dating someone called Eddie. While Eddie hasn’t been officially confirmed as Hulkling within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have generated numerous hypotheses regarding their relationship.

Recently, ComicBookMovie had a chat with Miles Gutierrez-Riley, the actor who portrayed Eddie. In response to the favorable feedback on Eddie and Billy, Riley conveyed his gratitude, mentioning that he was genuinely moved by the outpouring of support.

Additionally, he pointed out that all those involved with “Agatha All Along” put in great effort to accurately portray the relationship, remaining faithful to the original content while showcasing Billy’s personality.

Absolutely, thank you for your kind words. I was genuinely moved by the warm reception given to Eddie and Billy. It’s clear that everyone involved at Agatha put genuine effort into ensuring authentic representation and accurately portraying their relationship, staying true to the original material and delving deeply into Billy’s essence.

Working within the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been an absolute delight, and I’ve made no secret of this fact during interviews. However, collaborating with Joe on that project was truly an honor, and it was nothing short of amazing. He’s incredibly intelligent, and he skillfully steered the show in a captivating manner.

As a hardcore gaming enthusiast, I was thrilled when the leading man from Smile 2 revealed his happiness over the warm reception of Eddie and Billy’s relationship. He even dropped a hint about future plans to delve deeper into Billy’s past and personal journey, making me all the more excited for what’s coming next!

Based on the conjecture, all I can express is my heartfelt emotion towards the way people reacted to Eddie and Billy. I am aware that there are numerous ideas about how we’ll proceed in delving deeper into Billy’s past, life, and experiences. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Jac Schaeffer disclosed that they originally intended for Teddy Altman, or Hulkling as he’s known from the comics, to be Billy’s boyfriend on the show. The character Eddie was also going to be named Teddy as a tribute to the comics. However, Marvel decided not to incorporate Hulkling’s Kree/Skrull hybrid persona into this particular series.

In an homage to someone significant, the characters’ name was altered to Eddie by the writing team as a mark of respect. Schaeffer assured that this alteration was not intended to torment fans, but rather as a gesture of tribute to a person cherished within their group.

Initially, discussions took place regarding Hulkling’s character. The original name chosen for him was Eddie, as we were examining the artwork and brainstorming ideas. This decision by Marvel was made to keep him from being Hulkling in our series.

In our series, instead of portraying Hulkling, we’ve chosen to focus on Eddie. This character is named after someone significant to our writers, and it’s more than just a hint for the audience; it’s a heartfelt tribute to an important figure in our team.
