As a seasoned moviegoer and film history enthusiast with over four decades of observing the intricacies of Hollywood, I find myself both amused and somewhat baffled by the ongoing saga surrounding the kiss in Gladiator 2.
Director Ridley Scott recently shared insights about his upcoming movie, Gladiator 2. During discussions revolving around the movie’s elements that recreate the grandeur of the Colosseum, Scott also spoke candidly about certain aspects of the film, particularly Denzel Washington’s same-sex kiss scene in the storyline.
At the debut of Gladiator 2, located in Los Angeles, the director of Blade Runner expressed, “It wasn’t part of it,” referring to a scene where Washington was depicted kissing another man on-screen.
In response to The Little Things actor’s assertions, Scott, during an interview with Variety, further clarified, “Their portrayal was not a reflection of reality.
In response to Washington’s admission in an interview about kissing a man passionately, which was initially included in House of Gucci but later removed because the movie creators felt unprepared to include such a scene, according to the Academy Award-winning actor.
In the movie, as stated by Denzel Washington, he quickly ends up killing the same man within five minutes, followed by his remark, “That’s a fatal blow.
During the Gladiator 2 red carpet event on November 19, 2024, something particularly intriguing was observed. Off-stage, someone was overheard saying that the production team had revisited the scene in question, but they verified that no kiss actually occurred.
According to reports, it is suggested in the Gladiator 2 screenplay that Denzel’s character had past romantic involvements with males.
At the very same occasion, the actor from Remember the Titans clarified that indeed the action took place; yet, this time around, he described it as a gentle “peck”. He went on to mention that he kissed his character on the hand before ultimately “killing” the character in the movie.
Initially, Paul Mescal, the main character, acknowledged that his character, Lucius, was intended to kiss Pedro Pascal’s character on the forehead in the movie. Surprisingly, this scene was deleted from the final cut, despite being approved by the director.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the actor from All of Us Strangers revealed that he executed a specific shot on set. Later on, Mescal shared that he communicated with director Ridley Scott via radio from the video village, inquiring whether the movie-maker appreciated his work or not.
After a moment of “radio silence,” the filmmaker responded, “‘I’m afraid I did,” per Mescal.
Speaking about the scene where Mescal and Pascal share a kiss, Scott mentioned to CinemaBlend that he can’t recall the reason for its inclusion in the film, but promised that viewers will have an opportunity to witness it when the director’s cut is released.
Gladiator 2 will be released on November 22, 2024.
