‘Those Days Are Over’: Denzel Washington Recalls ‘Looking Fat’ In Older Pictures, Reveals How He Got Strong

As a die-hard fan, I’ve always admired Denzel Washington for his incredible acting prowess and unwavering commitment to his craft. But what truly sets him apart is his remarkable journey towards self-improvement and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s inspiring to see an icon like him take charge of his health at this stage in life, especially after realizing he looked “fat” in a picture with his beautiful wife Pauletta at the Academy Awards!

Back in the day, Denzel Washington made a life-changing decision that I’ve always admired. He opened up to Esquire magazine about his health challenges for their Winter issue. Reminiscing about the Academy Awards for Macbeth, he told me he saw himself and my beloved Pauletta in the pictures, and all I could think was, “Wow, he looked so much larger than usual, with that dyed hair.

That ceremony was not only a groundbreaking night for him as the most nominated person of color but also an eye-opener for him to change his health and lifestyle. Washington — who rocked his natural grey hair during the interview — told the outlet that after seeing how he looked at the event, he transformed his personality. “I said, ‘Those days are over, man,’” he added.

As I approach my 70th birthday next month, I, the actor portraying Malcolm X, am committed to fostering change – and it’s all thanks to my dear friend Lenny Kravitz, who I affectionately call my “little brother.” Lenny connected me with a trainer he vouched for, whom I later described as another spiritual guide in my life.

Washington revealed that he is currently having meals prepared for him and working out, aiming to lose weight from his current 190-ish pounds down to 185. In his latest movie, Gladiator II, which has garnered much attention, Washington showcased his muscular arms as he portrayed the cunning and power-hungry Roman emperor Macrinus, flaunting his biceps on screen.

The actor admitted that due to his constant efforts, he feels he’s getting stronger. “Strong is important. I’m doing the best I can,” he told the outlet.

The winner of an Academy Award has received acclaim for his role in the sequel to Gladiator, where he played a character representing a non-traditional Roman Empire. The story continues some decades after the original events, with Maximus’s son Lucius (played by Paul Mescal), who is also an heir to the throne, being forced into gladiatorial combat. Despite this, with Macrinus’s assistance, Lucius aims to escape the brutal arena and liberate the citizens of Rome.

Gladiator II is currently running in theaters.
