Live-Action HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Introduces Toothless in First Trailer

As a long-time fan who’s grown up with Hiccup and Toothless from the original animated series, I must say, my heart skipped a beat when I saw the live-action version of DreamWorks Animation’s beloved ‘How to Train Your Dragon’. With the return of John Powell’s enchanting score and the familiar face of Toothless, it felt like stepping back into a world that never left me.

Disney isn’t the only studio producing live-action adaptations of popular animated films; Universal is joining in with a CGI-animated version of DreamWorks Animation’s “How to Train Your Dragon”. Interestingly, while this new adaptation features real actors, it’s actually the computer-generated character, Toothless, who steals the spotlight in the film’s debut trailer. Remarkably, Toothless appears identical whether he shares the screen with cartoons or live-action characters.

If we’ve never stopped enjoying John Powell’s fantastic “How to Train Your Dragon” score, let’s pretend we did and welcome it back instead! But since that’s not the case, let’s talk about how impressive this movie looks. Director Dean DeBlois has made his animated Viking world feel incredibly real. He also chose great actors for both Hiccup (Mason Thames) and Stoick (Gerard Butler, who reprises his previous voice role). It’s no surprise that Toothless hasn’t changed much in this live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” trailer… or at all. We’re perfectly fine with that because nothing can surpass perfection.

So, what’s going on here, you might wonder? For enthusiasts of the animated movie, certain scenes will look familiar due to some precise reenactments. However, if you’re new to this series, let me provide a brief introduction: Here is the official summary provided by Universal Pictures.

In the rugged island of Berk, long-standing enmity between Vikings and dragons has been the norm for generations. However, Hiccup, the creative yet underestimated son of Chief Stoick the Vast, breaks centuries of tradition by befriending Toothless, a formidable Night Fury dragon. This unusual bond exposes the true character of dragons, causing a ripple effect that challenges the core values of Viking society. Alongside Astrid, a fierce and ambitious warrior, and Gobber, the village’s eccentric blacksmith, Hiccup navigates a world filled with fear and misconception. As an ancient danger arises, threatening both Vikings and dragons alike, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes crucial in shaping a new destiny. Together, they must tread carefully along the path towards peace, surpassing the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.

In the real-life adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon,” Nico Parker takes on the role of Astrid, while Nick Frost portrays Gobber. The trailer showcases their performances. Additionally, you’ll find Julian Dennison from “Deadpool 2”, Gabriel Howell from “Bodies”, Bronwyn James from “Wicked”, Harry Trevaldwyn from “Smothered”, Ruth Codd from “The Midnight Club”, Peter Serafinowicz from “Guardians of the Galaxy” and Murray McArthur from “Game of Thrones” in this production as well.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel like Hiccup and Toothless are more tangible than reality itself. The anticipation of when we’ll once again witness their adventures on the big screen is almost unbearable. The highly-anticipated How to Train Your Dragon live-action movie, starring our beloved characters, is set to grace theaters on June 13, 2025.
