As a lifelong Trekkie who has been following the adventures of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock since the original series premiered back in the 60s, I can confidently say that the release of “765874 – Unification” is nothing short of a dream come true. This heartfelt tribute to two iconic characters who never got their due in the final chapter of their on-screen journey, brings tears of joy and nostalgia to my eyes.
Exactly three decades ago, William Shatner bid farewell as Captain James T. Kirk in the movie “Star Trek: Generations”. In that film, Kirk sacrificed himself alongside a mourning Captain Picard, averting destruction of an inhabited planet. Yet, many fans felt unsatisfied by Kirk’s final goodbye. While it was enjoyable to see him act alongside Patrick Stewart as Picard, the emotional impact would have been greater if Leonard Nimoy’s Spock had been present during Kirk’s departure from this world. Unfortunately, that did not happen. However, now things are different…
As a die-hard “Star Trek” enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that nearly three decades after “Star Trek: Generations,” the Roddenberry Archive, in collaboration with OTOY, has rectified an old oversight through a short film named “765874 – Unification.” Directed by Carlos Baena, this emotional masterpiece features the participation of Shatner himself and the Leonard Nimoy estate. This largely wordless short film is bound to stir the deepest emotions in long-time “Star Trek” fans, especially those who yearned for a final, poignant reunion between Kirk and Spock. You can enjoy it in its entirety above.
The Next Generation episode focusing on middle-aged Spock (approximately 120 for Vulcans). Notably, actor Leonard Nimoy’s likeness is digitally enhanced to portray Spock, with Lawrence Selleck as the base.
60 years after initially portraying Kirk’s friend Gary Mitchell in the second pilot episode of “Star Trek,” titled “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” actor Gary Lockwood reprised his role. In this episode, Mitchell gained divine powers and employed them to aid Kirk in reuniting with Spock during his final moments. The implication is that Mitchell’s godlike abilities were necessary because when Spock died off-screen in “Star Trek Beyond,” he was actually in a different universe. The legendary Vulcan character met his end in the alternate timeline, referred to as the Kelvin timeline, which is featured in the contemporary J.J. Abrams films.
In this production, Robin Curtis, recognized for her role as Lt. Saavik, the Vulcan from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, makes a brief appearance. The younger Kirk’s body is portrayed by Sam Witwer, who is familiar to fans as the voice of Darth Maul in various Star Wars animated series. Other notable figures include Michael Giacchino, composer of the contemporary Star Trek films in the Kelvin universe, and David Blass, production designer for Picard. The film’s most obscure reference might be a character from Star Trek: Discovery, named Yor, who transitioned from the Kelvin Universe to the Prime Universe. Unfortunately, Shatner’s Kirk and Nimoy’s Spock didn’t get a final goodbye on screen. However, 765874 – Unification serves as an excellent substitute for that farewell.
