No One Hates the ’80s HOWARD THE DUCK Movie More Than James Gunn

As a gamer with a rich background of Marvel comics and movies, I can confidently say that the first big-screen Marvel movie was indeed Howard the Duck, a quirky character that holds a special place in my heart. Though it may not have been the commercial success Lucas hoped for, it certainly left an indelible mark on fans like me.

The initial Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster that most people might guess is Blade, or perhaps the 1989 Punisher with Dolph Lundgren. However, the surprise answer is Howard the Duck, a humorous character who was indeed part of the Marvel universe. This duck-like hero had a movie produced by George Lucas in 1986, but unfortunately, it didn’t fare well, both critically and financially. Interestingly, the dislike for this film seems to be particularly strong among Howard the Duck comic fans, including James Gunn, who currently co-heads DC Studios. As reported by Slashfilm, Mr. Gunn expressed his disdain for Howard the Duck as far back as 2017 in an interview with Yahoo News.

As a child, I absolutely adored Howard the Duck from Marvel Comics. He was my favorite character out of all of them, and I eagerly devoured every issue featuring him. The original Steve Gerber series was particularly dear to me, and I even went on to gather every comic where he appeared. My enthusiasm for this unusual duck was immense… except when it came to the puppet design. To my dismay, they gave him Caucasian-like eyelids instead of feathery or white ones, which I found rather unsettling.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve got to say that James Gunn did an outstanding job bringing a more authentic Howard in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy, even if it was just in brief appearances. The voice behind these memorable cameos was none other than Seth Green. Now we find out that this portrayal was a conscious effort to revamp the character, although on a smaller scale.
