Blake Lively’s Perfect Note Sparked Last-Minute Ending Change in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Reveals Shawn Levy

As a longtime Marvel enthusiast and diehard Deadpool fan, I must say that the third installment of the Deadpool franchise was nothing short of spectacular! The movie managed to deliver not only action-packed sequences but also emotional depth, which is often missing in superhero films these days.

Among the top films released this year, “Deadpool & Wolverine” stood as the runner-up, trailing slightly behind “Inside Out 2” in terms of box office revenue. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that box office figures don’t necessarily reflect a movie’s overall quality.

In simpler terms, the third “Deadpool” film was well-received by many fans (but not all critics), as it offered a resolution for some classic Marvel characters like Blade, played by Snipes, and Elektra, portrayed by Garner. Furthermore, it opened up intriguing prospects for mutants within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film concludes as Deadpool and Wolverine are transported back to Deadpool’s world, having successfully protected it from Mr. Paradox of the TVA and the Time Ripper device. Wolverine is given an opportunity to make amends for past mistakes and restore reality, while Deadpool dreams of winning over Vanessa and potentially earning a spot on the Avengers team.

Initially, it was uncertain whether Deadpool and Wolverine would make it through, given they put their lives on the line to annihilate the Time Ripper. Yet, that wasn’t the conclusion that Director Shawn Levy initially envisioned.

In the commentary for the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” it was disclosed that Blake Lively proposed an alteration to the ending scene, resulting in a quick set of retakes. The initial finale depicted Deadpool and Wolverine successfully rescuing the situation, with both characters surviving the ensuing fight immediately afterward.

In the concluding part, it’s unclear whether Deadpool and Wolverine survive or not, as Paradox delivers an emotional speech to B-15. The scene finishes with Deadpool and Wolverine emerging to disrupt Paradox, all while “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls plays in the background.

Reynolds mentioned that it was uncommon for films of such scale, typically requiring additional weeks of shooting, but he was pleased to share that the movie necessitated merely a day and a half of reshoots.

He especially mentioned a reshot scene where Matthew Macfadyen delivers a powerful speech, calling it a standout moment and praising Macfadyen’s performance as “miraculous.”

We completed only a quick 1.5-day reshoot for the film, something we’re quite proud of given that such projects often require multiple weeks. However, it was one of the scenes featuring Matthew that we decided to redo. Remarkably, his performance is exceptional.

Shawn Levy, the director, disclosed that the alteration in the film’s ending was actually proposed by Blake Lively herself.

In other words, it’s only fair to acknowledge the credit when it’s due. Initially, there was no sense of anticipation, as the power station exploded, and our protagonists managed to make it through. It was Blake Lively who expressed her desire to share in their potential loss, saying “You know, I’ve been with you throughout this entire movie. I want to feel the agony of them being gone. Let me experience that suspense so the intensity of their survival is more emotionally and physically impactful.

I found that particular scene to be reminiscent of Blake’s thought-provoking style, and it indeed offered a fresh perspective on this segment of the film. This is the reason behind our decision to re-shoot it. The end result, I must say, has made the entire experience so much more rewarding.

I was part of an exciting cast in that film, embodying the enigmatic Lady Deadpool – a fan-adored take on the character. (Blake Lively played this role too.)
