As a child who grew up enchanted by the magical land of Oz and the timeless charm of Judy Garland, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming film adaptation of “Wicked”! Being the daughter of Dorothy Gale herself, I’ve always felt a special connection to the world of Oz, so it brings me great joy to see such positive reviews pouring in from none other than Lorna Luft.
Lorna Luft, Judy Garland’s daughter, got on board with the Wicked train! Before its theatrical premiere, she expressed great excitement about the upcoming musical. Given that her legendary mother, Judy Garland, played Dorothy Gale memorably in The Wizard of Oz (1939), her enthusiasm for the film is particularly noteworthy.
John M. Chu, a talented director, strategically positioned Wicked as a prelude to the Oz tale. “This film is incredible! It’s grand, intelligent, emotional, and truthful,” Luft expressed on Instagram. “It’s awe-inspiring to behold… the sets, costumes, makeup, acting, choreography, and the overall scale of the production,” she continued.
She clearly detailed that the movie lived up to her anticipations, including all elements she desired. Moreover, she acknowledged the “talented” director for symbolically reclaiming the torch, sweeping broom, and magical wand once more, continuing the tradition, and enhancing the legacy of the series.
Air shared that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, portraying Elphaba and Glinda respectively in the film, were “simply extraordinary.” These significant characters are witches who eventually meet Dorothy, played by Garland, later on in the narrative. She commented that these actors deliver a captivating emotional journey.
In her glowing review, she extolled Grande and Erivo as “extraordinary and awe-inspiring,” likening their performance to an honest, amusing, and flawless act. She ended her comments by stating that Wicked honors the original tale of The Wizard of Oz. “Don’t miss out on this enchanting adventure through witchcraft!” she exclaimed. “Hold tight because it’s a thrilling rollercoaster ride filled with pure joy!” Wicked is an adaptation for the big screen of the long-running Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, which debuted in 2003.
The narrative centers on the growing bond between Glinda (Grande) and Elphaba (Erivo), an unusual friendship that unfolds. Elphaba, who struggles with fitting in because of her unique green-skinned appearance, forms an unanticipated alliance with the school’s most admired girl.
In the magical realm of Oz, we find Elphaba, a young woman whose green complexion sets her apart, and Glinda, a well-liked student. At Shiz University, they forge an unlikely friendship. Their bond undergoes a significant shift following their meeting with the powerful Wonderful Wizard of Oz, leading to a crucial turning point in their relationship.
Wicked will be released in theaters on November 22.
