As an ardent fan with a heart full of affection for the enchanting world of Hugh Grant and Richard Curtis, witnessing their camaraderie at the 15th Governors Awards was nothing short of a dream come true. The witty banter between these two titans of romantic comedy, each jabbing at the other with such endearing familiarity, was a testament to their shared history and the magic they’ve created on screen.

Hugh Grant and filmmaker Richard Curtis have consistently worked together to produce popular romantic comedies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), and Love Actually (2003). At the 15th Governors Awards, held on November 17, Curtis was awarded the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which Grant had the honor of presenting.

Among the director’s instructions for him were suggestions to deliver a humorous interpretation and assurances that they could edit around his performance, which he later described as “memorable.” The actor also reminisced about how his co-stars admired his audition for Four Weddings and a Funeral, but Curtis didn’t approve of it. Grant stated this with the words, “It will be forever etched on my heart.

He playfully implied that both the producer and financial team were eager for him to join, but it was the scriptwriter who vehemently opposed him, showing immediate and intense disdain, and went as far as thwarting his efforts to secure the role. “It’s this individual we are delighted to acknowledge tonight,” he quipped humorously.

At the event, Curtis was recognized in the same manner as Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who were bestowed with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. Simultaneously, Juliet Taylor and the late Quincy Jones were presented with the Academy’s Honorary Awards.

In June, the president of the Academy, Janet Yang, issued a statement praising Curtis as an exceptionally talented storyteller in comedy, highlighting his many philanthropic endeavors that reflect the esteemed nature of the accolade he received.
