As a long-time comic book enthusiast and film critic who’s seen more reboots than I care to remember, I must say that “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was a rollercoaster ride, alright – but not necessarily in a good way. While it wasn’t a total disaster by any means, it felt messy and incoherent at times, which is a far cry from what I expected from Sam Raimi’s return to the world of comic book movies.
The film “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which was expected to mark Sam Raimi’s grand comeback to the comic book universe, fell short of delivering a truly triumphant return. Despite being known for directing films like “The Evil Dead” and the initial “Spider-Man” trilogy, this movie didn’t quite live up to expectations; it wasn’t necessarily a poor film overall, but at times, it was disorganized and hard to follow.
Instead of focusing on the film itself, this article delves into its impact. Interestingly, despite several flaws, the movie surprisingly played a significant role in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Even years after its release, audiences are still discussing its key scenes and their influence.
A theory we have come up with involves the movie and a group known as the Multiversal Avengers, as we believe that the movie might have set up a potential appearance of this group sometime later, especially with what we know about the third Doctor Strange movie.
In analyzing the future trajectory of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s crucial to take note of various pivotal storylines presented in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” While we won’t delve deeply into Wanda’s character, as she has been a primary focus in our previous discussions, let us instead concentrate on the significant appearances of other characters in that film. The narrative threads concerning Doctor Strange himself and his personal journey will not be extensively explored here, but rather, we’ll focus on the intriguing cameos within the movie.
In essence, the film “Multiverse of Madness” showed us glimpses of various universes and presented alternative versions of characters like Mr. Fantastic, Captain Marvel, Professor X, among others. These characters were referred to as the Illuminati, but they weren’t from the main MCU timeline (Earth-199999), indicating just how far into the Multiverse the movie delved.
Towards the finale of the film, Clea made an appearance and laid the groundwork for the storyline that seems to be unfolding in Doctor Strange 3, a project we’ve also shared updates on. This announcement solidifies Sam Raimi’s return as director. At present, details regarding the movie’s narrative are scarce; however, it’s confirmed that Dormammu, portrayed by Denzel Washington, will take on the role of the primary antagonist.
Could it be possible that “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” might have hinted at the Multiversal Avengers? To clarify, the Multiversal Avengers are not a single team. In actuality, the term encompasses three distinct groups, and as far as the comics go, no official group has been named exactly that.
- New Avengers (A.I.M.) from Earth-616
- The Avengers founded by Avenger Prime related to God Quarry
- The “real” Multiversal Avengers, known simply as the Avengers
Neither of these teams were ever called the “Multiversal Avengers” by anyone else, but that’s what the editors have labeled them. The third team seems to fit best, as they consist of Avengers from multiple universes – much like the second group. However, the New Avengers are significantly different, but they share connections with the “Time Runs Out” storyline.
In the upcoming movie, it’s possible that Clea, Doctor Strange, and characters from various universes, hinted at by the Illuminati, might form a team known as the Multiversal Avengers. This could happen if the storyline involves the Black Priests and the current instability of the multiverse. While this theory is intriguing, recent developments in the movie plot have added some complexity to the situation.
It appears Marvel won’t delve too deeply into the Multiverse storyline, instead concentrating mainly on Doctor Strange and Clea’s encounters with Dormammu. Since Dormammu isn’t closely tied to these tales, we don’t anticipate many new characters emerging in this context. While it’s possible that the Multiversal Avengers might show up later, the movie doesn’t seem to hint at any such direction currently.
