As a long-time Batman fanatic with over two decades of comics and movies under my belt, I must say that this latest revelation about The Penguin series has left me both intrigued and slightly disappointed. On one hand, it’s exciting to learn that Scarecrow could have been part of the series, as he is one of Batman’s most iconic villains. However, on the other hand, it’s a bit disheartening to know that we missed out on seeing him in action.
This week, The Penguin concluded on a triumphant note, with the final episode of the series proving to be one of the best. The saga of The Penguin’s ascent to power has reached its end, and we eagerly anticipate what Matt Reeves has planned for us in The Batman: Part II, set to begin filming next year.
Despite numerous analyses of the series, both fans and critics have pointed out discrepancies from the comics, as well as various hidden references or Easter Eggs. However, it appears that there might be an overlooked Easter Egg, which if significant, could hold great importance for the storyline.
Essentially, a viewer spotted something intriguing in the show and shared it on X, leading us to believe that we may have overlooked a significant Easter Egg related to one of the main antagonists in the series. This Easter Egg appears to carry a significant backstory!
It’s clear that among Batman’s main adversaries, The Penguin stands alone as the one who has been featured in the series. The Riddler is mentioned, but he turns out to be of minor importance, and Vic is insignificant. Additionally, both the Falcone and Maroni families have made appearances, yet their storylines have mostly come to an end.
While the Mafia hasn’t always taken center stage in Batman’s roster of villains, the Falcone clan is undeniably one of the most infamous families in Gotham City.

Wow! A friend shared a Reddit post showing an Arkham-like Scarecrow glove and what seems like a Scarecrow mask in Julian Rush’s office.

Indeed, the images you’re looking at appear to show a glove with pins, as well as a foreboding mask – elements that strongly evoke one of Batman’s most menacing and resilient adversaries: none other than Jonathan Crane, better known by his villainous alias, Scarecrow.
At present, Crane isn’t featured in the series, although Dr. Ventris makes an appearance; however, it turns out that there’s a backstory to this situation, as suggested by the tweet.
It’s interesting to note that the character we commonly refer to as Julian was originally planned to be Jonathan Crane. In fact, the early drafts of the script had him written as Jonathan Crane.
It appears that Lauren LeFranc initially planned to incorporate the Scarecrow character, but we’re unsure if or how this would have been executed in the final version. The reasons behind this change, as well as when and why it occurred, remain unclear at present. However, it seems that Reeves and LeFranc ultimately decided against pursuing this idea further.
It’s plausible that Julian might not be his real name, as Jonathan Crane may have used it as a disguise, considering he wasn’t present in the series finale. This leaves room for the character to reappear in future installments of the franchise, which could be intriguing given that Scarecrow was not among the villains hinted at in the rumors about Mr. Freeze, Professor Pyg, or even Clayface.
Conversely, since this element was eventually altered, it could indicate that Reeves won’t be incorporating it into the series. If Jonathan Crane had been introduced in the show initially, it would have been a significant challenge for Reeves to handle, given Scarecrow’s prominence as a character. It wouldn’t suffice to simply mention his name and then ignore him throughout the series.
If Reeves hasn’t decided to bring in Scarecrow just now, it could mean that he instructed LeFranc to exclude the character from the project for the time being.
For now, it’s unclear what connection, if any, exists between Julian and Jonathan Crane in the series, as we only know that Crane does not make an official appearance. A clever fan pointed out this possible link, leaving us to speculate whether it was a coincidence or a deliberate plot point. At present, the theory regarding their potential relationship is just that – a theory without any confirmed facts.
