As a gamer with decades of comics and superheroes under my belt, I couldn’t be more thrilled to see John Stewart, Green Lantern, getting his own statue in Burbank, California. It’s not just about the character’s heroic deeds or cosmic adventures; it’s about representation and breaking barriers. John Stewart was the first Black American superpowered hero in DC Comics, and that matters immensely to me.
In a notable tribute, Green Lantern, specifically John Stewart, is set to stand alongside Batman and Wonder Woman as individual bronze statues in Burbank, California within the DC Comics universe. However, contrary to popular expectations, it’s not Hal Jordan, Green Lantern’s original pilot, who is being honored. Instead, it’s his successor John Stewart who will be immortalized. Although Hal Jordan has a more extensive comic book history, John Stewart holds significant importance for reasons beyond the pages of his comics. He was the first Black American superhero in DC Comics, making this statue a remarkable milestone in representation within the industry. In 1971, John Stewart initially emerged in issue #87 of Green Lantern/Green Arrow. Known as a determined young architect, the Guardians of the Universe selected him as Hal Jordan’s alternate Green Lantern for Earth. Even though there were existing Black characters with powers at DC Comics, John was the pioneer in this role. He had limited appearances during the 1970s. However, by the 1980s, he assumed Hal’s role permanently as the Green Lantern of Sector 2814. In the 1990s, he got his own spin-off titled Green Lantern: Mosaic. Yet, it was during the early 2000s when the animated Justice League series aired on Cartoon Network that truly catapulted John Stewart to stardom. Millions of children watched this show, featuring him as the team’s Lantern. This widespread popularity has only grown, and his upcoming live-action role in the series Lanterns, played by Aaron Pierre, will further cement John Stewart’s status as a superstar.
The new Green Lantern statue is located at Hanger 18, 1775 North Victory Place, in Burbank, CA. Artist and DC President Jim Lee was on hand for the unveiling, along with several other DC Comics creators. The statue design was inspired by artist Jamal Campbell. To honor the city’s newest statue, DC also commissioned an exclusive comic, Green Lantern John Stewart: Global Guardian, written by John Ridley and Charlotte Fullerton McDuffie with art by Amancay Nahuelpan, CHRISCROSS, and Jordi Tarragona, with cover art by Jamal Campbell.
Speculating about the timeline, it seems that statues have been unveiled for Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. One might wonder when the Man of Steel will receive his due recognition, especially with a new Superman film scheduled for release in 2025. Furthermore, considering The Flash has been published alongside these characters since 1940, it appears that it’s high time for all four – collectively known as the “Core 5” of DC Comics pantheon – to be honored with statues, symbolizing their enduring legacy in the comic world.
