As a gamer who’s been through countless superhero sagas and TV marathons, I can confidently say that Grant Gustin‘s portrayal of The Flash was nothing short of spectacular. The way he brought Barry Allen to life, with his charm, wit, and raw emotion, made every episode a thrilling ride.
Initially, CW’s “The Flash” was intended as a backdoor pilot, but due to the impressive audience reactions to Grant Gustin’s guest roles as Barry Allen on “Arrow”, executives decided to develop it into a full pilot instead. This change offered a larger budget and allowed for a more in-depth exploration of Barry’s storyline.
11 years since stepping into the role of Barry Allen, Grant Gustin recounts his journey to landing The Flash part and reminisces about the initial hurdles the team encountered during the first season, when there were doubts about the series’ long-term prospects.
Initially, I hesitated to try out for the show as I believed my chances were slim. To my surprise, I ended up being selected. Even now, I can’t help but wonder why they chose me for the role.
Even after a decade, I’m still grappling with feelings of self-doubt, knowing that I’ve achieved something significant. Initially, these doubts were compounded by the demanding schedule and frequent bouts of insecurity, questioning my abilities quite frequently.
During those initial years, I experienced an overwhelming amount of stress and exhaustion. To be honest, I wasn’t always at my best – it felt like for the first time, I was stretched too thin. It was a relentless, grueling nine-and-a-half month filming schedule, spent mostly alone in Canada. Essentially, my life was consumed by this project, leaving no room for balance whatsoever.
Additionally, Grant Gustin mentioned that he had a sense of assurance when joining The Flash, attributing his confidence to the immense popularity of its sister series, Arrow.
It appears I underestimated the duration as I was unaware it would last for such an extended period. The agreement we made was for six years, but at that time, I thought ‘Six years? That’ll be a breeze!’ because I was inexperienced and didn’t realize that wasn’t something one should take for granted.
However, The Flash gained popularity as it was a spin-off from Arrow. While Arrow’s character is noteworthy, our focus was shifting towards The Flash, as it has a wider recognition.
Additionally, I realized that maintaining an engaging narrative about the fastest man alive would be challenging, given his complex abilities, and over time, it has proven difficult to ensure consistency, realism, and interest in the storyline. This complexity often leads to numerous plot complications.
Over the years, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges with that, but I always held on to the belief that if Arrow was successful, we would be too. I recall Jesse Martin telling me, “Dude, that’s not how it goes. We’re fortunate just to get renewed this year!” [laughs] Despite his words, coming from someone I admired and trusted, I remained optimistic, thinking “We’ve got this!
