As a child of the ’90s and early 2000s, I can vividly remember the days when Britney Spears ruled the pop culture scene like a queen. The news that Jon M. Chu, the director behind Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked, is working on a screen adaptation of her memoir “The Woman in Me” has me absolutely giddy with excitement!
Following his work on the film adaptation of the musical “Wicked”, director Jon M. Chu has hinted at the upcoming screen version of Britney Spears’ top-selling memoir “The Woman I Am”. Universal Pictures acquired the rights to this memoir back in August.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Chu, who’s collaborating on the film with producer Marc Platt, expressed his viewpoint that Britney Spears’ story should be told accurately, as he feels there are relatable aspects for many people in it. Moreover, he emphasized that Spears symbolizes a generation of individuals who came of age during the 2000s and early ’90s.
On the day Universal bought the screen adaptation rights for her memoir, the Toxic singer joyfully shared the news with fans on X, revealing her delight at having “worked in secrecy on a project with #Marc Platt. He’s always been the director of my preferred films.
Spears, at the time, asked her fans to “stay tuned” for more updates.
As of now, there haven’t been any official announcements regarding the cast, and Chu also revealed during his discussion with THR that there isn’t a scriptwriter associated with this project yet. However, he did express some ideas about what the film’s storyline could be.
Chu explains that the movie primarily focuses on how fans and the public often perceive celebrities as if they belong to them, a topic he finds intriguing and wishes to delve deeper into, as he shared.
Regarding his personal connection with Spears, the director of Crazy Rich Asians expressed that he has admired her for a long time and has attended numerous concerts of hers. This includes watching her perform as one of the 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium. He stated, “She’s always been someone I’ve admired and respected.
When asked about a mysterious post by Spears hinting at her potential involvement in his upcoming movie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the filmmaker declined to give details and suggested the outlet instead reach out to Spears for answers. However, he did express that it’s always a privilege to receive shoutouts from her on social media.
Recently, Spears marked a special milestone with The Woman in Me turning one, expressing gratitude towards her fans for their unwavering support throughout the past year and opening up about how meaningful this journey has been to her through X.
In a week from today, on Friday, November 22nd, the first part of Chu’s Wicked, featuring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and others, will be released. The second part is set to premiere on November 26th, 2025.
