As a gamer with a keen interest in both movies and the G.I. Joe universe, I must admit that Jon M. Chu‘s potential return to the world of G.I. Joe has piqued my curiosity. While his current focus is on the highly anticipated musical adaptation of Wicked, the idea of him directing a G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover movie is nothing short of exhilarating!
You might recognize the name Jon M. Chu now or perhaps more recently, given that he’s set to direct the upcoming two-part film adaptation titled “Wicked“, derived from the popular stage musical. The project has generated significant media buzz, and we eagerly await its release to gauge its quality. However, a review of its merits is better suited for another discussion.
In addition to his work on “Wicked“, Chu has also been involved in other significant or well-known productions. One of his earlier projects was the 2013 film “G.I. Joe: Retaliation“, which was his third solo production and the first one unrelated to the “Step-Up” series.
The film “Retaliation” wasn’t universally appreciated by the critics, yet it was seen as an advancement, and it managed to generate a revenue of $375.7 million globally against a production budget of $130–155 million. This was considered a commendable outcome for a movie of this kind.
Ten years on, Chu was inquired about a possible re-entry into the G.I. Joe universe, and his response… let’s just say, you’ll need to discover it for yourselves!
The G.I. Joe movie series continues to exist, though it’s not as bustling as some others. Last year saw the release of Snake Eyes, which received a mix of positive and negative feedback. It’s also been announced that a collaboration with the Transformers film series is being developed.
To date, no director has been assigned for the project, however, it is confirmed that Derek Connolly will pen the script.
Chu is currently focusing on the film “Wicked,” which appears to be a highly anticipated production based on early feedback. However, following that project, there’s a chance he might revisit the G.I. Joe franchise and helm the upcoming Transformers crossover movie. Chris Killian from ComicBook.com asked him about this opportunity, and here’s what Chu had to say:
Currently, I’m immersed in a challenging universe, or should I say, the GI Joe World. It’s filled with characters like Snake Eyes that I adore, and Henry Golding did an amazing job portraying him. But who knows, things might change. For now, though, I have another movie, GI Joe 2, to attend to. And as for me, in this world, I’m Fiyero.

At this point in time, Chu has left the door open for a possible comeback, but it appears that he currently has no intention or plans to return.
He is committed to Wicked and maybe, once that is done, Chu might be called in by Paramount to direct the upcoming crossover, depending on how long Paramount is willing to wait to start production of the movie. Of course, we will keep you updated about any new developments, so be sure to keep following us for all the latest news and updates!
