As a die-hard fan of musical dramas and all things magical, I must confess that I’ve been utterly enchanted by the heartwarming bond between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the stellar duo behind the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked. Their friendship seems to have transcended the screen, weaving its way into their very souls, as evidenced by their matching tattoos!
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the stars of the upcoming musical drama Wicked, have forged a lasting friendship through a sweet gesture. On November 12th, Tuesday, these “Wicked” actresses graced Sirius XM’s Hits 1 LA with Tony Fly & Symon podcast, where they discussed how they are commemorating their movie experience.
The pair disclosed that they had inked several identical tattoos as a memory of their time working on the Wicked movie set. When queried about these tattoos, Grande (the actress portraying Glinda) mentioned coyly, “Some are kept hidden.” Erivo (playing Elphaba in the movie) showed off some tattoos. “We both have ‘For Good’ etched on our palms,” she explained, alluding to the famous musical duet between the film’s main characters.
The Thank You, Next singer continued, ‘We have our poppies.’ This phrase is a nod to the song from The Wizard of Oz, where poppies symbolize sleep and were used by the Wizard to put Dorothy under his spell after their encounter, a reference that’s also seen in Wicked.
Later on, Erivo disclosed that she got a tattoo of her character’s hat and broom. “I have Glinda from the 1901 original L. Frank Baum’s book,” Grande added. Once more, she joined the conversation, sharing that she also had her character’s famous quote inked, which reads, “Perhaps some of us are simply different.
While in the thick of our Wicked filming, my dear friend John M. Chu referred to us as “hardcore” and “intense” for getting tattoos connected to the movie. I remember him saying, “We’re not even halfway through yet.” To which I responded, “I guess we shouldn’t be doing this?
Ever since the pair embarked on the movie version of the popular Broadway musical, they’ve been openly displaying their camaraderie. Erivo expressed this unique bond during her interview with Jimmy Fallon on his talk show, stating, “Our relationship is truly special.” Regarding Grande, Erivo added, “She’s gained a lifelong friend in me.
Beyond their shared screen chemistry, their vocal harmonies are equally enchanting. The actress openly acknowledged that their voices complement one another perfectly. She explained, “Although our voices differ greatly, when we sing together, it simply feels right.
Wicked will hit the theaters on November 22.
