As a die-hard Whovian who’s witnessed Steven Moffat’s magical touch transform the TARDIS for over five decades, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard he was penning this year’s Christmas Special. With a knack for clever wordplay and an uncanny ability to blend time travel with absurdity, Moffat has always managed to keep Doctor Who fresh and intriguing.
Steven Moffat, who used to be in charge of ‘Doctor Who,’ continues to have a substantial impact on the show’s universe.
He recently discussed his involvement in this year’s Christmas Special titled ‘Joy to the World,’ in which ‘Bridgerton’ star Nicola Coughlan will appear.
The title, playing with words as is common with Moffat, subtly foreshadows the protagonist’s name, Joy, and establishes the mood for this festive installment.
In a revealing chat with a regional BBC station, Moffat unveiled some tidbits about the special, marking his 50th script for the show and possibly his last for a while.
He clarified that he had no intention of reprising his role in ‘Doctor Who’ following his final episode titled ‘Boom.’ Instead, he has been immersed in several other ventures such as the play ‘The Unfriend,’ the miniseries ‘Inside Man,’ and ‘The Devil’s Hour,’ a series produced by Sue Vertue’s company.
Moffat’s return was prompted by an email from Russell T. Davies, who found himself overwhelmed with the second series and unable to finish his Christmas script.
Instead of finishing off what Davies started, Moffat chose to create an entirely fresh storyline. The narrative he concocted revolves around a hotel that travels through time, offering a humorous critique of the hospitality sector, a field Moffat finds ripe with opportunities for absurdity.
He teased the plot saying, “Imagine in the distant future, a hotel chain discovers time travel. Their first business move? Sell the unsold nights throughout their own historical timeline.” It’s a classic Moffat setup—mixing time travel with business antics.
Check out this video! It aired during tonight’s 6:30 pm broadcast on BBC South East. Originally, RTD had planned to write the special but ran short on time, so Moffat was brought in to complete it so that he could commence Season 2 of Doctor Who. #DoctorWho
