As a fan who has followed Colin Farrell‘s career since his early days, I must admit that his transformation into Oswald Cobblepot, also known as The Penguin, was nothing short of breathtaking. His portrayal of the complex character has been a rollercoaster ride, filled with moments of both darkness and light, pain and joy, fear and courage.
Following a fantastic season and eight exhilarating episodes, HBO’s The Penguin came to an end on November 10, 2024, with a spectacular finale. This series has received accolades from both fans and critics, who have appreciated every aspect of the show, particularly Colin Farrell’s portrayal as The Penguin, and Cristin Millioti’s performance as Sofia Falcone.
In this piece, we won’t give away any spoilers, but if you haven’t watched the final episode yet, beware! As the series has concluded, those associated with it are now ready to share insights into its future developments – revealing plans they have in store for their characters.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Colin Farrell shared his thoughts on a possible second season of ‘The Penguin’. He divulged whether he’d consider returning for another installment and, if so, under what conditions, assuming a second season is ever greenlit. For more details, continue reading!
Colin Farrell’s journey with the character Penguin presents an intriguing tale. He first appeared in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”, and the director commended Farrell for his portrayal, expressing:
Colin exudes both beauty and compassion. Living in such darkness, not only did he endure it, but also had to wear layers of latex repeatedly – a role he cherished, yet it felt like a form of torment simultaneously.
Back in an earlier conversation, I remember Farrell expressing his dislike for donning that costume once more. Curious about his feelings, The Hollywood Reporter posed the question to him.
There was that quote that went viral where you said you never wanted to put the makeup on again.
In a less energetic setting, a writer extracted my words. At times, I find myself venting to anyone who’d care to listen, as you might say “I can’t wait to finish this” or similar phrases. Just the thought of being seated for extended periods makes me feel uneasy. However, I’ve always cherished the material, and the honor of embodying a character that has existed in comic books for so long, then evolved through different adaptations on TV and in movies, was never lost on me.

However, it appears that Farrell’s stance on reprising his role for a possible second season has significantly shifted. He has offered an insight into the reasons behind this change in his perspective.
If a fantastic concept arises for season two, and the writing exhibits even more power and impact compared to the initial season, I’d definitely be on board. For me, achieving success is not about reaching lofty heights; it’s merely about whether people enjoy it. I appreciate recognition from critics, but I understand that the audience ultimately holds the most weight in determining a project’s worth.

It’s worth noting that Farrell has expressed interest in reprising his role as The Penguin, yet the quality of the script for a potential second season is crucial. As of now, it remains uncertain whether this will come to pass. However, before we wrap up, let me add this tidbit:
Do you have a scene from the season you’re most proud of?
While working on this show, I have a unique perspective compared to most projects I’m involved in because I’m completely covered in three hours’ worth of prosthetics and approximately 20 pounds of makeup. As a result, I find it less unsettling watching Oz than other characters I’ve portrayed.
Despite finding some scenes potentially more engaging or thrilling, it’s Deirdre O’Connell’s portrayal of Oz’s mother that captivated me most. The poignant scene where Oz returns home to find his mother bathing, her dementia evident, left him powerless in the face of it. In this moment, she implores him to end her life before things worsen, yet she remains the cornerstone of his existence.
In my perspective, she’s more than just a hero or an inspiration to me; she’s the embodiment of love and acceptance I yearn for, yet never truly received from her. Despite this, as long as she’s alive, there’s always hope that I can make her proud. The thought of snuffing out her life’s light is something chilling, it’s the furthest thing from my heart. In my view, this is Oz at his most truthful in the entire series.
