If you didn’t realize it yet through his “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, director James Gunn is a big fan of pop music. Although his upcoming “Superman” movie won’t be as musically saturated as his “Guardians” films, it will still feature some tunes. Gunn carefully chooses the type of music that suits each character in the film. For the “Superman” movie, he’s prepared Spotify playlists for the main characters, starting with Clark Kent, followed by Superman’s adversaries such as Lex Luthor, Eve, the Engineer, and Metamorpho, the Element Man.
Clark’s playlist is brimming with lively tunes, so it’s no wonder that “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey made the cut – it seems like it could be Clark Kent’s theme song. As for Lex Luthor, despite his villainous nature as a power-hungry genius, having David Bowie and Prince on his personal playlist suggests there might be a softer side to him. Eve, his girlfriend, has quite the collection of pop music – think lots of Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and classic Britney Spears. The Engineer seems to prefer the industrial sounds of NIN and Aphex Twin, fitting for his character. And Metamorpho’s love for ’80s New Wave and synth pop indicates he has impeccable taste in music, as far as we’re concerned.
Gunn excitedly shared his enjoyment of crafting these playlists in a recent Instagram post (you can find it at the top). It’s clear from Gunn’s perspective that someone’s regular music choices offer a glimpse into their inner self. Coming up, you’ll be able to check out Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen’s playlists for Superman on July 8. Following this, the Justice Gang members – Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern – will unveil their musical tastes on July 11. Notably, this is also the same day that Superman hits theaters nationwide.
