As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for horror and Western genres, I can hardly contain my excitement for Chris Condon’s latest offering, ‘The Goddamn Tragedy’. Having delved deep into the chilling tales of survival and psychological terror in games like ‘The Long Dark’, ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’, and even the eerie frontier of ‘Fallout: New Vegas’, I can sense a kindred spirit in Condon’s work.
Once again, Chris Condon delivers a chilling blend of western and horror genres titled ‘The Goddamn Tragedy,’ drawing inspiration from the ominous ordeals experienced by the Donner Party.
The one-shot comic produced by Condon and illustrator Shawn Kuruneru, published by Oni Press, tells a chilling story over its 48 pages.
In this captivating tale, the Jansons – Ellen, Irena, and Leo – are journeying westward, seeking fresh opportunities for a new chapter in their lives.
Sadly, disaster befalls the family as Leo leaves the group, forcing the others into a struggle for existence.
In his creative process, Condon found motivation from the infamous Donner Party, a group of pioneers who were stranded by snowfall between 1846 and 1847. Faced with agonizing decisions between survival, perishing, and resorting to cannibalism, they served as an inspiration for him.
In simple terms, it’s clear what happened with the Donner Party, but the story of the Janson family still leaves us shuddering with uncertainty.
‘The Heart-Wrenching Drama’ is set to enthrall readers with an intense ambiance akin to ‘The Shining.’
Kuruneru strives to enrich the storytelling through his unique artistic approach, marked by somber tones and rugged sketches which resonate with the tale’s ominous atmosphere.
Previously creating comics with a western theme such as ‘Cave Grave,’ ‘Poor Moon,’ and more recently ‘Fishflies #6,’ it’s clear that Kuruneru has plenty of experience in this particular genre.
He expresses excitement about partnering with Condon, known for his work on ‘That Texas Blood.’
This single issue belongs to a series published by Oni Press, which highlights creative works from up-and-coming artists. It continues a trend set this year and serves as the third installment in a sequence of five.
Lovers of gripping Western tales have something exciting to anticipate: ‘The Goddamn Tragedy’ is set for release on bookshelves in May 2025. This thrilling narrative offers a tale of endurance and psychological horror that delves deep into the realms of human despair and fortitude.
