As a seasoned gamer and TV aficionado who has witnessed countless twists and turns in both virtual and real-world narratives, I can’t help but find this whole Agatha All Along situation rather intriguing. It’s like watching a game of chess where the pieces are being moved around without revealing the grand strategy yet.
As a gamer, I can’t help but roll my eyes at the debate surrounding award season categories. Case in point: The Bear, supposedly a comedy series? Really? The most nerve-wracking holiday episode I’ve ever seen doesn’t exactly scream laughter to me!
What makes this significant? Well, the categories of award shows provide valuable insights since they employ specific criteria to group shows under particular headings. As reported by Variety, Marvel Television Studios have chosen to submit “Agatha All Along” as a comedy series for the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Emmys.
Other Disney+ shows like “Echo” and “The Book of Boba Fett” were entered in the miniseries categories for awards, but it’s interesting to note that “Agatha All Along” isn’t being promoted as one. The Television Academy’s Emmy Awards Rules and Procedures outline what constitutes a limited or anthology series.
A “Limited Series” refers to a television program that consists of two or more episodes, totalling at least 150 minutes in runtime, and tells a standalone story from start to finish. Unlike other series, this one does not continue beyond its initial season, as it resolves all plotlines and does not carry over any ongoing storyline or main characters into future seasons. Any subsequent seasons of a Limited Series should present entirely new material, with no prior knowledge required about the events of the previous season.
An Anthology Series refers to a collection of standalone shows that each tell a self-contained, unique narrative. Unlike other series, they do not carry over an ongoing plot or central characters from one episode to another. Instead, these episodes are often connected by common themes throughout the series as a whole.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel excited about the potential return of Agatha in the Marvel/Disney universe! The fact that they chose not to categorize it as a limited series might imply that her tale isn’t fully spun yet. Just like how the FX series Shogun officially announced another season, it seems plausible that Agatha Harkness’s storyline could be extended, possibly convincing the Television Academy to consider it for future drama categories. I sure hope so!
Our upcoming series will face off against highly-regarded shows such as ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and FX’s “The Bear” (not a comedy). The main cast member, Kathryn Hahn as Agatha, will be up against Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, and Jean Smart, who all received Golden Globe awards for “Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.” If Hahn secures a Golden Globe nomination, it would mark her first one. This could also pave the way for our show’s potential success at the Emmys.
