As a longtime fan of Stranger Things and Eddie Munson, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation when it comes to the upcoming season 5. The episode title clues we’ve been given have certainly piqued my interest and left me hopeful for our beloved metalhead’s return.
Okay, listen, we’re just going to preface this by saying that our hopes that Eddie Munson will be alive in Stranger Things 5 are high, but our belief that he actually will return is low. Still, when life gives you a Stranger Things 5 episode title with a giant bat god in it, one associated with death and sacrifice, you just have to make some space for yourself to believe that Eddie Munson could come back. And that’s not the only potential clue that Eddie Munson could still be alive hidden in the full list of Stranger Things 5‘s episode titles.
As an avid fan, I’d like to share a theory that some might call wishful thinking—let’s call it hoping for the best! Here are the hints (that I really want to believe are true) found in the episode titles of Stranger Things 5, which seem to suggest that Eddie Munson is not meeting his end.
Stranger Things 5, Episode 6 Invokes Camazotz, a Bat God, and Eddie Munson Is Associated with Bats
Title “Escape from Camazotz” in Stranger Things season 5, episode 6, intriguingly references Eddie Munson. This title is for the penultimate episode of the series, and “Camazotz” is a bat god from Mayan mythology. In the K’iche language, “Camazotz” translates to “death bat.” The god is linked with death and the “realm of Twilight.” The Mexic-Arte Museum suggests that this bat deity may have originated because bats would inhabit the subterranean caves near sacred sinkholes, which ancient cultures believed were gateways to the underworld. At dusk, when bats emerged from these ‘gateways’ and started feeding on other animals, it must have been quite a spooky sight.
You’re talking about entrances to the underworld, right? That reminds us of the Upside Down world… And who is linked to death, bats, and the Upside Down? It’s Eddie Munson. Unfortunately, Eddie met his end in the Upside Down, surrounded by demon bats. Before he even heard about Vecna and others, Eddie already had bat tattoos. Now, we’re not saying that the title of the upcoming ‘Stranger Things 5’ episode must be about Eddie Munson being alive; we’re just suggesting it would be a pity if it wasn’t. If a god of death associated with bats appears, it seems unfair to attach it to anyone else when Eddie Munson already has such strong symbolic connections with these creatures.
It’s delightful to imagine Batman-like Eddie making an appearance from a gateway… and if necessary, partaking in the consumption of the blood of other creatures. (If it comes to that.) It’s also worth noting that Camazotz is a deity known for sacrifice, and who has made more sacrifices than Eddie Munson?
Eddie Munson, Kas the Bloody-Handed, and Camazotz
In legend, Camazotz was known for drinking the blood of his foes, earning him the title of a Mesoamerican vampire. Remarkably, speculation among fans suggests that Eddie Munson might come back to life as a vampire on “Stranger Things”. This speculation is centered around the Dungeons & Dragons tale of Kas, the Bloody-Handed Warrior. Intriguingly, Kas fought against Vecna in the lore, was defeated, and later resurrected by him as a vampire. While Eddie Munson’s story doesn’t exactly mirror that of Kas, it seems plausible that the creators could follow this pattern to bring Eddie Munson back on “Stranger Things”. With episode titles hinting at bats, vampires, and death gods for “Stranger Things 5”, it appears that Eddie Munson is bound to be part of the storyline.
Eddie Munson Was a Sorcerer in Stranger Things Puzzle Tales
Transitioning from bats, let’s delve into the title of Stranger Things 5, episode 4, “Sorcerer.” The group in Stranger Things is known for enjoying a hearty game of Dungeons & Dragons, and if you’re familiar with Stranger Things or have played Dungeons & Dragons yourself, then you understand that selecting your character class is an essential part of the excitement. While some Stranger Things characters have been assigned official Dungeons & Dragons classes by the series, others have more symbolic connections. However, we haven’t encountered a sorcerer in Stranger Things… Or could it be that we have?
Intriguingly, the character Eddie Munson has been dubbed as a Sorcerer in the tie-in game “Stranger Things Puzzle Tales”. Although the occurrences in this game aren’t considered canonical, it’s fascinating that Eddie Munson is the only sorcerer we’ve ever encountered within the realm of Stranger Things. What makes this even more intriguing is that Eddie’s Sorcerer identity emerged at the same time as the release of the episode titles for Stranger Things 5, which seems a bit suspicious. If Stranger Things 5 intended to introduce an essential sorcerer, wouldn’t they be more cautious about who else claims this title? We interpret this as a strong indication that Eddie Munson will indeed feature in Stranger Things 5. If he isn’t a bat deity, then he could very well be a sorcerer instead.
Episode 1 of Stranger Things 5 Matches Lyrics From the Song Eddie Munson Played in the Upside Down, “Master of Puppets”
The title clue for the upcoming “Stranger Things 5” episode, “Eddie could return,” may seem vague, but since it was previously hinted at, let’s explore it. We know that the first episode will be titled “The Crawl.” Interestingly, the Metallica song “Master of Puppets” that Eddie Munson plays in the Upside Down before his death has lyrics: “Come crawling faster / Obey your master / Your life burns faster / Obey your master, master.
The terms “The Crawl” and “Come Crawling” may not be exact matches, but there seems to be a link between them. We hope this connection indicates that Eddie’s Kas/Vampire storyline might continue, potentially reappearing in Stranger Things Season 5.
Stranger Things 5, Episode 8, “The Rightside Up,” Could Reveal Heaven
In simpler terms, the title clue for the last episode of Stranger Things 5 doesn’t exclusively refer to Eddie Munson, but it does hint at his potential return, even if he might not be alive. The final season’s last episode is named “The Rightside Up.” At TopMob, we’re guessing that the Rightside Up could be a parallel world similar to Hawkins, like the Upside Down. However, unlike the Upside Down, which represents despair and suffering, the Rightside Up symbolizes hope and life. If the Rightside Up is considered a form of heaven, then it should include Eddie Munson’s afterlife. Ideally, we’d want to see Eddie alive in Stranger Things 5, but we’ll take him any way we can get him.
Could Eddie Munson Be Alive in Stranger Things 5?
Essentially, we’re not keen on Eddie becoming a bat deity, an evil sorcerer, or a spirit in the afterlife; instead, we simply want Eddie Munson to be alive when Stranger Things returns for its fifth season. No strings attached, just pure Eddie. And while it’s premature to speculate whether these episode titles hint at Eddie’s return to Stranger Things, we can’t help but hope that 1987 will be his year. As always, we’ll keep advocating for Eddie Munson’s comeback – cowards!
