As a die-hard Marvel fan who has watched every movie multiple times, I can say with confidence that Jude Law brought a unique charm to Yon-Rogg in Captain Marvel. However, having heard his recent interview with Variety, it’s clear that he yearned for more freedom to explore the character’s humor and quirks.
In the 2019 film “Captain Marvel,” Jude Law portrayed Yon-Rogg, a leader of Starforce who served as a mentor to Carol Danvers. Initially, Yon-Rogg appears benevolent, but it’s eventually revealed that he has personal intentions and ultimately opposes Danvers.
Critiques on Law’s portrayal of Yon-Rogg were varied, with certain viewers expressing a desire for a deeper exploration of his character, including his past and motivations.
As it transpires, Jude Law was keen on exploring more facets of his character and adding more enjoyment to it. In a recent conversation with Variety, he opened up about his experiences with this particular role.
To my understanding, Yon-Rogg had already given about all he could provide, which to me marked the pinnacle of Marvel’s storyline.
Law expressed his desire to further explore and amplify the comedic aspects of his character, as well as delve deeper into its nuances. He found enjoyment in embodying the role, but admitted that the costume was restrictive, making movement challenging. Despite rigorous training for stunts, he noted that the bulky rubber suit posed difficulties when trying to execute them effectively.
It was a really good experience. I wish I’d been allowed to have a bit more fun with the part. I wanted him to be more arch. I wanted to lean into the humor more. Also, those suits are hard to move in because they’re thick rubber.
For a couple of months, you attend a stunt camp where you practice fight scenes and learn various skills. Once donning the suit, you might think, ‘Oh no! I can’t even reach my toes, how will I perform all these actions with this gear on?’ However, you manage to find a way around it.

It’s worth noting that Brie Larson, another cast member, has discussed the difficulties of donning superhero attire as well. Her top tip for actors joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe revolves around the suit itself.
As an enthusiast, I was the one who broke the mold by being the first to send out emails to everyone because it was incredibly specialized and quite bizarre. People would often say, “I have no clue how to do this.” Well, nobody does! Why should they? My advice was always, “Train, for you’ll want your body to be as ready as possible because the job will only become more challenging over time. Also, master the art of using the restroom in your suit.” The first time I wore the Captain Marvel costume, it took a full 45 minutes just to get me in and out of it!
