As a die-hard fan of Young Thug since his “Stoner” days, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions hearing about his release from prison. On one hand, I’m overjoyed that he’s back to creating music and entertaining us with his unique flow and captivating lyrics. On the other, I’m saddened by the fact that he had to spend nearly three years behind bars for charges that seemed to overshadow his artistic contributions.
As per recent updates, US rap artist Young Thug walked out of jail on Halloween (October 31), following his admission of guilt for multiple charges.
The report emerges following approximately 900 days of incarceration for the Grammy-winning musician, who was held on accusations of racketeering and gang offenses.
At a recent trial, the artist known as Pick Up the Phone was initially anticipated to receive a sentence of time served plus 15 years of probation. Nevertheless, based on reports from BBC News and court records, it appears he was freed that same evening.
In court, Jeffery Lamar Williams (also known as Young Thug) acknowledged that he was accountable for the offenses he had previously committed.
Additionally, in the course of his five-minute address, the hip-hop artist admitted that he’s carried a misguided notion of what it means to be ‘cool’, which led him to act in ways that were not right. He went on to convey his intention to make amends with anyone he may have hurt in the process.
He also explained that at higher levels, such behavior isn’t advisable as it might not turn out well… and the consequences could potentially be borne by you alone.
Instead, the prosecution requested a 45-year sentence, broken down as 25 years in prison and 20 years of supervised release.
Despite the attempts at plea bargaining not being successful, Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker went ahead with sentencing him to the time he had already served, resulting in his release.
During her sentencing, the judge suggested to the artist known as Just How It Is: “I encourage you to strive to become a bigger part of the solution instead of contributing more to the problems.” Williams admitted guilt for one gang-linked offense, three drug offenses, and two firearm offenses.
Moreover, the well-known music legend admitted no guilt for heading a criminal group and breaking the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Essentially, this implies that Williams won’t dispute the allegations or accept penalties on behalf of his fellow gang members.
In addition to the verdict, the judge set forth various requirements: He must perform 100 hours of community service, he is not allowed to interact with gang members or his former co-accused, and he may not reside in metropolitan Atlanta for the initial decade during his 15-year probation term.
In May 2022, rapper Young Thug was taken into custody, alongside 27 others. They faced charges that included conspiring to breach the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, a law often employed in mafia-related legal proceedings.
His case has been reported to be the longest in Georgia’s history.
