Does Agatha’s Ending in AGATHA ALL ALONG Line Up with Her Marvel Comics Storyline?

As a long-time Marvel Comics enthusiast and a connoisseur of the supernatural, I find myself utterly captivated by the enigmatic evolution of Agatha Harkness. From her humble beginnings as an elderly witch stroking her pet cat Ebony, to her tragic demise and spectral resurrection, Agatha has traversed a path that is nothing short of spellbinding.

In the finale of “Agatha All Along”, Agatha Harkness, following a mental link with Billy Maximoff, ultimately decides to yield to Death. She shares a farewell kiss with her former lover, Rio Vidal (also known as Death). Her body then decomposes swiftly and sinks into the earth, having lived for several centuries. However, this is not the last we see of Agatha Harkness in this realm; she reappears in the final episode, now manifesting as a ghost with white hair. This plot twist aligns quite well with her comic book character’s history and suggests intriguing developments for her in the future.

Agatha Harkness Was Originally an Old Crone Witch

In the original Marvel Comics, Agatha Harkness wasn’t portrayed as a malicious villain but rather a cryptic figure in the lives of the Fantastic Four. Initially, she debuted as an elderly witch, fitting the “Old Crone” stereotype, dressed in Edwardian attire and frequently seen with her pet black cat, Ebony. During the 70s era of Marvel Comics, she not only looked after young Franklin Richards, the son of Reed and Sue Richards from the Fantastic Four, but also guided Wanda Maximoff in the mastery of authentic magic. It was Agatha who erased any memory from Wanda’s mind that her children Billy and Tommy ever existed, when she discovered they were magical creations.

Agatha Goes From Old Witch, to Ghost, to Young New Body

At some point in the future, Wanda uncovered that she had previously given birth to twin boys. Upon this revelation, she became enraged due to Agatha and the Avengers concealing the truth from her. Overwhelmed by anger, it appears she used her powers to kill Agatha, leaving her body decomposing in her residence. When Nick Fury examined her remains, he deduced that Agatha had been deceased for quite some time. However, this was not the final chapter of Agatha Harkness’s story. She manifested as a ghost after Wanda found redemption. Agatha served as her guide on the Witches Path, instructing her once more, but only in ethereal form. Eventually, Agatha regained a new physical body, much younger and featuring black hair with a white streak. This transformation was facilitated by the witch Natalya Maximoff, who is also Wanda’s mother.

MCU Agatha Now Resembles Her Classic Marvel Comics Incarnation

How does the MCU portrayal of Agatha compare with her comic book destiny? Initially, the two versions differed significantly, but toward the end, they became more alike. Similar to her comic character, Agatha in the MCU died and continued to exist as a ghost in this realm. Interestingly, Kathryn Hahn’s portrayal of Agatha as a ghost features white hair, similar to Jack Kirby’s original comic book design. Furthermore, Agatha appears ready to guide Billy Maximoff, much like she did with his mother Wanda in the comics.

One thing that hasn’t happened, at least not yet, is that Agatha Harkness in the comics has a new flesh-and-blood body. Meanwhile, MCU Agatha is obviously still a ghost. Funnily enough, Agatha in the comics was given a new younger body with black hair after Kathryn Hahn made that version of the character so popular in WandaVision. Now comic book Agatha looks more like Kathryn Hahn, while the actual Kathryn Hahn looks more like her original comic book appearance. (So much for corporate synergy). But who knows what happens next? Perhaps Agatha could return to mortal life and the comics and MCU versions will truly align. We just hope whatever that project is, it happens soon.
