2025 Set to Be One of the Biggest Box Office Years in History with 3 Major Records Already Broken

2025 looks set to be a remarkable year at the worldwide box office, having broken three significant records so far.

The newest addition to the Jurassic series, titled “Jurassic World: Rebirth“, made a striking $318.3 million worldwide during its first five days, setting a new record for the highest July 4th weekend premiere. This impressive feat emphasizes the timeless charm of the dinosaur storyline.

In North America, the newly released film titled “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” helmed by director Gareth Edwards, debuted on a Wednesday and raked in an impressive $147.3 million during its initial five days. Notably, $91.5 million of that total was earned over the holiday weekend, spanning from Friday to Sunday.

The film achieved great success worldwide, debuting in 82 different countries and raking in an additional $171 million to its overall earnings. In China specifically, it garnered a staggering $41.5 million on approximately 65,000 screens, including 760 IMAX theaters. This marks the largest opening for a movie in China this year.

Jim Orr of Universal expressed, “This outcome is simply fantastic. ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ offers just what summer audiences desire – an enormous, exciting, and exceptionally well-crafted adventure.

Disney’s live-action version of Lilo & Stitch achieved a remarkable milestone by earning the highest box office revenue over Memorial Day weekend, sharing the title with Mission: Impossible. Domestically, it brought in an impressive $182.6 million. This film has gone on to hold the position of the most profitable movie of the year worldwide, outperforming A Minecraft Movie.

In international cinematic circles, the Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2” has broken records, earning an astounding $1.99 billion worldwide – making it the most profitable animated movie ever. Interestingly, it accomplished this remarkable success without substantial income from North American box offices.

The film proved to be extremely successful in China following its premiere. Within merely three days of release, it generated a staggering 1.1 billion yuan (roughly $137 million), marking the first movie to surpass 1 billion yuan during the Chinese New Year celebration in 2025. By the fourth day, it had already made over 2 billion yuan, and by the sixth day, its earnings had soared past 4 billion yuan, shattering the record for the fastest ascent to that amount.

In just eight days, the movie “Ne Zha” surpassed its predecessor’s record, earning more than 5 billion yuan (roughly $684 million), making it the highest-grossing animated film in mainland China. Interestingly, the “Ne Zha” series is now only the second in China to earn over 10 billion yuan (approximately $1.37 billion) with only two films, reaching this milestone by the ninth day and surpassing the 6 billion yuan mark.

In the United States, the premiere of the movie took place on February 12th. Tickets for this event sold out swiftly, and during its initial weekend, it earned an impressive $7.2 million. This opening weekend revenue surpassed the $1.2 million that the first Ne Zha movie made by a significant margin.

It’s evident that we’ve merely reached the midpoint of the year, yet significant milestones in cinema have already been surpassed. This suggests a robust recovery for the film industry, having weathered the challenging effects of COVID exceptionally well.
